FISHERSVILLE - Wilson Memorial proved Friday night that a good defense would beat a good offense.  The Green Hornets limited Fort Defiance to just 150 yards of offense and stopped the Indians on a late drive with a key interception as the hosts pulled out a soggy 7-0 non-district win.

Once the turnovers began, the bleeding never did stop for the Little Giants as they lost the Battle for the Ball for the second straight year, falling 52-0 to Stuarts Draft in a rainy River City on Friday.

STAUNTON - In Game 2, Waynesboro had its chances to break free, but with several mental mistakes, the Little Giants fell in three to Robert E. Lee on Thursday 25-14, 25-18 and 25-16 for their second district loss.

STAUNTON - With a gym that felt like a burning sauna room, there was only one phrase that Grace Christian volleyball coach Sue Leonard continued to pound into the Warriors heads as they took on Wilson Memorial in the final match of the Lee Invitational on Saturday: “Keep up the energy. Keep up the energy, ladies.“

FORT DEFIANCE- If throwing two interceptions was hard to swallow for Buffalo Gap’s Travis Morris, then throwing the game-winning touchdown to Josh Wenger in the fourth quarter to defeat Fort Defiance 20-14 eased the senior’s pain quickly.

Big Ticket: It ain’t your fathers rivalry anymore

Trumped by the hype surrounding modern rivalries such as Wilson vs. Riverheads, Stuarts Draft vs. Waynesboro and Robert E. Lee vs. Harrisonburg, tonight’s game with Fort Defiance hosting Buffalo Gap doesn’t receive as much attention as it did in the 1980s.

Rockbridge beats Waynesboro for first time in school history

Since Rockbridge County High School was built in 1992 the Wildcats had never beaten Waynesboro’s volleyball team - until Thursday night.

Draft still undefeated

In Harrisonburg, Stuarts Draft swept Harrisonburg 25-23, 25-15 and 25-10 in high school volleyball action on Tuesday. Amber Christy led the way for the Cougars with 15 service points including three aces. Tabitha Bowman added seven service points, three digs and eight kills. Rachel Maki had two digs with six kills while Cameron Johnson had four blocks three for points.

Warriors sweep away Green Hornets

CROZET - After losing to Albemarle in five games in its home opener, Western Albemarle regrouped and shifted its gears against Wilson Memorial on Tuesday,  sweeping the Green Hornets 25-13, 25-13 and 25-18.

Changes in the Valley

Cross country coaches will have to change their strategy this season in the Southern Valley.  Over the last two years, there have been several dominant runners in the district who were able to hold large leads over the bulk of the pack. The top five was almost predictable at the end of a meet.

Isaacs return to Western ends and a heartbreaking loss

CROZET - For more than three quarters Waynesboro and Western Albemarle were in a stalemate in a wet return over the hump for Waynesboro coach Steve Isaacs.
