Bison survive Bulldogs

HARRISONBURG - With a regional championship hanging in the balance, Buffalo Gap’s Holly Morgan accepted the challenge of leading the Bison to a 56-49 win over Luray on Saturday night at EMU.

HARRISONBURG - Two late-season party crashers collided Saturday night at Eastern Mennonite University in the Region B, Division 2 championship game.

Draft places two high jumpers

LYNCHBURG - Stuarts Draft’s Christina Fenske and Caitlynn Filla finished first and second respectively at the Group AA indoor track meet on Saturday at Liberty University, bringing two gold medals home for the Cougars.

Waynesboro stops the Bees, wins championship

DALEVILLE - Turnovers, poor shooting and Waynesboro’s Devon Brown were too much for Brookville to overcome as the Bees’ fell 59-37 to the Little Giants in the Region III championship game at Lord Botetourt High on Saturday.

Little Giants beat Lee, win Region III

PENN LAIRD - It took an overtime, but Waynesboro walked away with the Region III championship on Saturday in its 55-52 win over Robert E. Lee.  The game started with the Leemen in control. Lee caught an early lead with its quick guards cutting off Waynesboro passes. The Leemen played a man defense with a trap at the top of the key, giving the Little Giants problems moving the ball around. Waynesboro went into the second quarter down by four, but not for long.

Waynesboro, Lee meet tonight

The rivalry between Waynesboro and R.E. Lee continues to fester, but not in the Little Giants’ backyard. The atmosphere Friday at the Waynesboro boys basketball practice painted a different picture.

HARRISONBURG - Buffalo Gap’s Sara Lamneck picked a good time to stay out of foul trouble.

Deacon keeps Wilson going

AMHERST - No Katie Morris- No problem.  While the injured Wilson Memorial senior and her ailing left knee watched from the sideline, teammate Deidre Deacon picked up the slack, and the Hornets beat the Chatham Cavaliers 60-47 in the Region B Division 2 semifinals on Friday night at Amherst.

Little Giants face Brookville tonight for Region III crown

Everyone thought Waynesboro’s chances of beating undefeated Turner Ashby were as good as seeing coach Secrett Stubblefield in a dress on the sideline.

Redskins re-sign QB Collins, expected to return as backup

12:35 p.m. The Washington Redskins agreed to terms Friday to re-sign quarterback Todd Collins, who led a late run to the playoffs last season but is expected to return as a backup.

Lee beats Liberty

HARRISONBURG - Robert E. Lee’s freshman guard Terrell Mickens stepped up his game on Thursday in the semifinal round of the Region III tournament to lead his team to a 54-40 win over Liberty and lock up a spot in the Group AA tournament.

Waynesboro beats Broadway

HARRISONBURG - The Waynesboro Little Giants are headed to the Group AA tournament for the second year thanks to a 66-36 thrashing of Broadway on Thursday at James Madison University.

Pride ousted by Panthers

HARRISONBURG - A rough third quarter put Riverheads in a hole that it couldn’t get out of despite a furious fourth-quarter rally as Page County prevailed 62-52 over the Gladiators in the Region B, Division 1 semifinal at Eastern Mennonite University.

DALEVILLE - The Waynesboro girl’s basketball team upset rival Turner Ashby on Thursday night 58-57 in a stunner.

Bison stomp Central

SWOOPE - Buffalo Gap blew Central Senior out of the tournament race 82-34 on Wednesday night in the Region B, Division 1 quarterfinals. The Bison outscored the Chargers every quarter.  In the first half Gap accumulated 42 points to Centrals 13 points.

Wilson takes down defending champs

FISHERSVILLE - Wilson Memorial fans showed up for the Green Hornets’ Region B, Division 2 basketball contest with defending Group A champs Clarke County and a track meet broke out.

Giants will have to get by TA before going to Group AA

Turner Ashby is a nagging reminder for the Waynesboro girls basketball team of the speed bumps that litter the road to the Group AA tournament.

NARUNA - William Campbell’s Amber Marstin knew the shot was good as soon as it left her hands. She knew it wouldn’t have mattered if the ball went in or not.

Waynesboro stomps Northside

Waynesboro defeated visiting Northside 80-63 on Tuesday night and ousted them from the Region III quarterfinals.

Waynesboro slips Brookville in 2 OTs

LYNCHBURG - The Brookville boys’ season wasn’t supposed to end. Not this early. Not after a perfect Seminole District season.

Rustburg was no problem for R.E. Lee

STAUNTON - Robert E. Lee’s consistent and precise play took them to a 69-46 win over Rustburg on Tuesday in round two of the Region III tournament.  The Leemen’s trap defense flustered the Red Devils, who couldn’t find an open man, let alone get across the half-court line. Lee played a man-to-man defense the entire game, which kept Rustburg from driving to the basket.

There is something in the water in Waynesboro

There’s something in the water.  Can’t quite put a finger on it, but Waynesboro’s boys and girls basketball teams have drunk from the same fountains.  It permeates the halls of Little Giant heaven and wraps itself around the two teams like a warm blanket.

Feds may probe Clemens over testimony

10:37 a.m. A draft letter asking the Justice Department to investigate whether Roger Clemens made false statements to Congress has been written by House staffers, The New York Times reported on its Web site Monday. The chief of staff for committee chairman Henry Waxman said no decision has been made on whether to ask for a criminal investigation.
