GREENVILLE – After a scoreless first half, Riverheads came out in the second half hitting hard and running strong, taking a 20-7 win over Buffalo Gap on Friday in the Region B, Division 1 semifinals.

To those that say a sequel is never as good as the original, Buffalo Gap vs. Riverheads, part two proved them wrong.

LYNCHBURG — Liberty held its second straight opponent to below 30-percent field goal shooting and put three players in double figures, Tuesday evening against UNC Greensboro. As a result, the Flames opened the 2009-10 campaign with their second straight victory, a 60-42 triumph at the Vines Center.

HARRISONBURG — The season opener for Mary Baldwin did not end the way coach John Stuart wanted it too, but he couldn’t have been more proud of the effort his team gave coming back from a 20 point deficit in the second half to cut the Eastern Mennonite lead to two points.

BRIDGEWATER — Fresh off a buzzer-beating win against Fork Union, the Fishburne Military School postgraduate basketball team put on a dominating performance against Massanutten Military Academy on Monday night at Bridgewater College.

The Buffalo Gap football team locked up a No. 4 seed on Monday after Central-Luenburg lost to Buckingham. Gap will have to play Riverheads for the second straight week in the Region B, Division 1 semifinals on Friday.

WAYNESBORO —Strong passes from quarterback Chet Berry combined with major defensive stops took Fishburne Military School to a 13-12 win over Hyde Leadership on Saturday for the Capital Area Football Conference Championship.

Fishburne’s Donte Morales struggled all night finding his shot, but with the game on the line the Virginia Beach native found the perfect time to make his first and only bucket of the night.

STAUNTON — Robert E. Lee defeated Stuarts Draft for the second time this season on Saturday afternoon, 49-19, advancing to the semifinals of the Region III, Division 3 playoffs.

Sheer dominance.

GREENVILLE — Riverheads and Buffalo Gap pride themselves on smash mouth football. On a rainy Friday night, both teams could eat up the slop.

LYNCHBURG — Liberty’s defense set the tone for its season-opening victory over Winston-Salem State Friday, keeping the Rams off the scoreboard for the first 8:44 of play. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Devon Brown took care of things at the offensive end, exploding for 26 points in the Flames’ 71-26 triumph at the Vines Center.

Tonight’s Region III, Division 3 game between Stuarts Draft and R.E. Lee has been postponed due to weather. The game will be played on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Gypsy Hill Park.

At least the Cougars don’t have to travel too far in the first round of the Region III, Division 3 playoffs this year.

FISHERSVILLE — E.C. Glass proved to be a little too much for Fort Defiance on Thursday night in the Region III semi-finals. The Hilltoppers swept the Indians in three games 25-16, 25-20, 25-14.

The Wilson Memorial girls cross country team made the jump to Group AA at the start of the season not knowing what to expect. Coach Gary Kessler knew he had something special coming with four freshmen joining the team. Little did he know that the Green Hornets would be the only Augusta County team left alive heading into the Group AA meet at Great Meadow on Saturday.

FORT DEFIANCE – Flawless play, solid defense at the net from Katie Dunsmore and hard kills from Becca Houff led Fort Defiance to a three-game 25-18, 25-18, 25-16 sweep against William Byrd during the Region III quarterfinals on Tuesday.

GREENVILLE — It all came to an abrupt end for Riverheads on Tuesday night.

The Hilltoppers ran their quick-strike attack nearly flawlessly in the first game of a 25-9, 25-17, 25-15 sweep of the Little Giants, setting the tone for the match that lasted just over an hour.

STUARTS DRAFT — The Staunton River Golden Eagles ended Stuarts Draft’s volleyball season on Monday night, sweeping the Cougars in three decisive games 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 during the first round of the Region III tournament.
