Little Giants gobbled up by Broadway

If at first you don't succeed, try and try again.
That was the story for the Broadway offense after almost getting picked off by the Waynesboro defense twice in the first half.
Both Will Walter and Tim Brown had their chances to pick off Broadway quarterback Adam Caplinger, but each came up short for the Little Giants on Homecoming night in the River City.
"They gave us some problems on defense early on," said Gobblers coach Frank Sorrells. "We didn't get off the game plan too much, we just had to start blocking better."
In the third quarter, the Broadway's offense woke up as the Gobblers went on a 69-yard scoring drive capped by Jarrett Lohr's 2-yard run as the Gobblers took a 32-7 non-district victory over Waynesboro on Friday.
"That third-quarter drive was the key to this game," Sorrells said. "Our defense had held them pretty well, but we had to step up the run game."
With 4:34 left to go in the third, Waynesboro tried to establish a running game of its own, but running back Steven Brown was held at the line of scrimmage for no gain. On the next play Walter was sacked for a 5-yard loss.
But Waynesboro refused to give up when Walter went long to Terrell Thompson who was wide open for the pass. As Thompson came down, the football fell out- no score.
"We just can't get a break," Waynesboro coach Steve Isaacs said. "We're not a bad football team. I can't question their effort."
In the fourth quarter, the Gobblers kept plugging away at their running game as Brett Olinger and Colton Wenger flip-flopped turns at speeding past the Waynesboro defense.
"They're two good guys that make big plays for us. They've definitely gotten tougher especially Olinger whose got good speed," Sorrells said. "We count on [Olinger] a lot."
On 1st and 10 from the 45-yard line, Olinger found a huge hole to go warp speed down the right sideline for the 30-yard gain.
"They had the ball and we just couldn't get it," Isaacs said. "We ran out of time."
In the next few downs, Waynesboro had managed to hold the Broadway run to a 4th and 2 at the 18-yard line, but again it was the strong attack of Olinger that pushed to the left for the 8-yard gain to the 10.
On 1st and goal from the 1, Lohr pounded through for the touchdown upping the lead to 26-7.
"We're just learning how to come together," Sorrells said.
However, Olinger got his own score later on in the fourth quarter when he broke away from Waynesboro and went 72 yards down the left sidelines for the touchdown.
Waynesboro still had fight left as Thompson found the open hole to the 31-yard line for the 15-yard gain. Walter then connected with Tim Brown for another 14-yard pick up.
With 2nd and 5, Thompson stunned the Broadway defense when he sped up the middle for a 20-yard gain. For Waynesboro, that's as far as the excitement went when Waynesboro fumbled the ball on the 16-yard line after a bad snap.
"These kids have as much guts and pride in what they're doing as any team I've ever had," Isaacs said. "Because it's tough to come back week after week and do what we do."
