Cal Ripken Sr. all-stars slip by Valley

WALDORF, Md. — The Cal Ripken Sr. League was not given a bit of a chance to win the Mid-Atlantic Classic by anyone but themselves and thanks to a defensive sixth inning, they held on for a 2-1 win Wednesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.
The Valley League had its best chance to score in the top of the sixth inning.
In a tie ball game, the Cal Ripken Sr. League all-stars loaded the bases full of Valley players without allowing a hit.
Todd Brazeal of Staunton led off the inning against Jeff Guthridge from Maryland with a four pitch walk. Guthridge then hit Winchester’s Aaron Dudley.
Staunton’s John Dishon tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt against Guthridge, botching the first two.
Guthridge then proceeded to hit Dishon to load the bases with no one out.
A change to the bullpen was the big difference that the Ripken all-stars needed.
The change brought in Nick Cicio from College Park to face Covington’s Junior Arrojo.
Arrojo popped out to second for the first out.
Chris Clinton from Staunton struck out on a swing that he could not hold up on followed up by a groundout to second by Luray’s Drew Martinez.
A pair of runs in the fifth got the teams to the crucial sixth inning. The Valley picked up the first run of the game, rallying with one out.
Martinez and AJ Winsberger from Luray connected on singles.
A double from Blake McDade of Staunton plated Martinez.
The Ripken league did not let the lead last long scoring one in the bottom half of the same inning.
Cleanup hitter from Bethesda, Jarrod Parks led off with a triple into the right field corner but Dishon struggled with the hop dealing with the bullpen in the process.
Herndon’s Corey Taylor picked up the RBI on Parks with a ground out to short.
The Cal Ripken League added one more in the sixth inning to clinch the game after the Valley League ended the top of the sixth without a run.
Waynesboro coach Andy Chalot, whose name was listed as “Chabot” in the program, survived the name malfunction to coach the whole game at third.
“Well, it was definitely different,” Chalot joked. “But it’s still better than at Woodstock when I didn’t even get a shirt.”
Rob Kral went 0-for-1 for the Generals and Chris Enourato pitched the entire eighth inning without allowing a run.
