QUICKSBURG - It was a wet 'n' wild finish for ShenValley No. 1 Buffalo Gap on Friday but the Bison got their eighth straight victory of the season. The Bison crushed Stonewall Jackson 34-0.
Four plays into the game, Buffalo Gap quarterback Travis Morris faked a handoff and ran in for the 40-yard touchdown.
"We came out of the gates pretty well," said Buffalo Gap coach Rob Maxwell. "The kids were focused."
The Generals tried to answer the touchdown with a drive of their own, but quarterback Dylan Dawson pitched the ball to running back Hunter Stout and it got lost in the transition. Buffalo Gap recovered, putting the Bison at the Generals' 46-yard line.
From that point on, it was all Pickle Nuckols as the sturdy running back blasted through Stonewall Jackson's defensive gap for three consecutive runs.
At second and goal from the 6, Nuckols broke through the heavy tackles and drove in for the Bison touchdown. Buffalo Gap led 14-0.
"He's a tough running back," Maxwell said.
However, there was still more scoring to be done, but this time it was full back Austin Bowers' turn.
After a second failed attempt by Stonewall Jackson, the Bison were back on offense.
Buffalo Gap started by giving the ball to Bowers, who was able to get a few yards up the middle. Nuckols picked up the rest of the yards, giving the Bison the first down. But when Nuckols broke to the left for a big gain, the Bison were called for a holding penalty, backing them up to the 39-yard line.
Two plays later, on second and 16, Morris went for his first pass attempt of the night, but it fell incomplete.
Morris kept at it and went for the pass again on third down. With a high floater down to the right sideline, Morris connected with wide receiver Boone Jones for the 23-yard pass, putting the Bison at Stonewall's 36-yard line.
The Bison kept rolling as Morris pitched the ball to Bowers on third-and-four from the 30. Bowers picked up a huge 22-yard gain.
Two plays later, Bowers upped the score to 20-0 when he plowed straight in for the two-yard score.
Stonewall Jackson tried to get back on track in the second quarter, but the Bison were just too much to handle and went on to score another touchdown before the half.
Buffalo Gap travels to Riverheads on Nov. 2.
