SHENANDOAH SPEEDWAY: Pena gets 3rd victory

Jay Pena had a plan for his 16-year-old son on Saturday night.

“Just ride the first 100 laps,” he told Sergio.
And ride he did as he came on strong in the second 100 laps to capture his third win at Shenandoah Speedway.

Kevin Bush picked up another Shenandoah Pharmacy quick qualifier award at 15.719 with Sergio Pena alongside with a time of 15.753. Bush jumped out to an early lead but showed no resistance when the field started catching up and passing him as he dropped back to the seventh position by lap 20.

Pena led some early laps until he also backed off when the No.7 car of Jody Cahill, of Manassas, came charging to the front. Cahill, driving his recently acquired car from retired Shenandoah driver Scott Marshall, led until the yellow flag came out on lap 100.

As the field got back under way to start the final 100 laps, it looked like an entirely different field of drivers.
Pena started pressuring Cahill and passed him three laps later to take a lead that he would never relinquish. Bush, Purdham, Cahill and Staton rounded out the top five.

In the VMCRA Mini Cups race Justin La Duke started on the pole with a time of 19.451 and Ryan Adams alongside at 19.695. Jason Watkins and Hunter Koschara showed that it doesn’t really matter where you start but where you finish as they came blasting through the field to finish 1-2 in the final running order. Ryan Adams finished third followed by David Williams and Quinn Houff.

UCAR action had the entire field inverted for the start of the race, so that allowed Chad Kuykendall and Jeremy Woods the opportunity to start upfront. That would be short lived however as the green flag dropped.

Cars fanned out 4 wide coming down the front stretch and entering turn two.

Steven Andes, of Waynesboro, jumped out front to lead with Jeremy and Chris Grogg close behind and Randy Good closing in fast. There was rubbing and racing going on from the front of the pack to the rear as the action heated up and the cars temperatures and the drivers tempers seemed to match the action. Good came across the line in first followed by Lauren Edgerton and Jeremy Griffith.

Mike Gund picked up his first ever win as he led the entire 50-lap Street Stock event. It wasn’t an easy victory for Gund as the No. 7 car of R.J. Judd stayed on his bumper and kept the pressure on Gund for the entire race. But as second-place finisher Judd said in Victory Lane: “I would have liked to have won but I wasn’t going to spin him out for the win.”

Glen Heatwole finished in third.

In other racing action on the night Rette Causey won the 25-lap INEX Legends race with Michael and Scotty Edwards in second and third.

Brian Kirby picked up the Mini Modified race

Jr. Wright won the Sportsman race followed by Deryle Lawson and John Alger
