Volleyball has been a love of Wilson Memorial’s Christine Coffield since she was a 10-year-old. The sport is in her blood and has been part of her family. Even her teammates have been part of that history.
“Kala [Guy] and I have played together since we were little,” Coffield said. “My parents played volleyball. My dad coached me when I was really little.”
Working with her father and playing during the off-season paid off for the senior. In a Region B semifinal win against Nelson County on Nov. 6, Coffield collected 18 service points. That win secured a Group A berth and was another solid performance from Coffield that has contributed to the success of the Hornets.
With her back against the volleyball net at mid-court, Coffield’s eyes were lit like the rest of her team on Monday before the Green Hornets swept Northumberland in the Group A quarterfinals.
Her achievements didn’t come easy. Coffield spent her free time working on enhancing her setting skills and improving her game.
“I mainly keep playing during the off-season. It’s mainly playing on club teams like the Junior Olympic teams,” Coffield said. “It helped me get to a new level and to play a better quality game.”
Coffield was put to the test during her stint in the high school off-season.
“Last year, I was on a team where the coach really challenged my setting,” Coffield said. “Since last season, my settings have really improved.”
Her father is never far away. He attends his daughter’s games and sometimes offers advice.
“He really gets into that. He analyzes the game,” Coffield said.
Having a father that has coached volleyball helped.
“I think it’s good. They give good advice, but it’s a lot of criticism, too,” Coffield said.
Coffield is one of the seven seniors that have given quite a show at the Hive this season. The team experienced a transformation over the last four years.
“It’s been building up,” Coffield said. “We’ve been getting more people on the team. Before it was mainly Kala. But now we have so many awesome hitters and great passers.”
Meanwhile, her dad might be cheering and instructing from the bleachers at the Siegel Center tonight.
“He doesn’t make me watch tape or anything,” Coffield laughed. “But you can see him in the crowd yelling.”
Wilson will play Strasburg tonight in the Group A semifinals in Richmond at the Siegel Center. The match is scheduled for 5 p.m.
