Fort Defiance’s Tiffany Lockridge bumps the ball on Tuesday night against Rockbridge in Fort Defiance.
FORT DEFIANCE — Rockbridge wants to make this season a another defining moment in its volleyball program. The Wildcats knocked off Waynesboro last year for the first time in its school history after a 15-year drought. This season marks a new year with a new coach for the Wildcats.
But they will have to wait. Fort Defiance had its own plans. The Indians came up with the 3-2 win over the Wildcats 25-24, 27-29, 25-20, 18-25, 15-8, in their first home game of the season.
Fort skimmed by Rockbridge taking the first game 25-24. The Wildcats knotted the second game 25-25. A sideout and a point from Wildcats’ Katie Evens gave Rockbridge the 29-27 win.
The Wildcats won the third game 25-20, but Fort was right on their heels. Fort answered back with a 25-18 win the fourth.
They blew away the Wildcats 15-8 in the fifth. Kayla Pleskonko had seven blocks on the night. Jess Clifton had nine kills and Tiffany Lockridge had 21 service points on the night.
“It is always good to win at home, this was our first game and these girls played hard,” Fort coach Lynn Alexander said.
The Wildcats played behind new coach Jessica Smith.
“I was pleased about all we have done so far,” Smith said. “We just lost it in the end. We got too emotional. The Fort coach even said that we played a great game. I don’t know what they did last year, but I think we will be very competitive.”
“It’s always good to win a district game. These girls play with passion and support each other no matter what,” said Alexander.
“This is our season, we have the team to win. We have a great group this season,” said Alexander.
Fort Defiance will host Harrisonburg Thursday night.
