STAUNTON – Stuarts Draft devastated Robert E. Lee in three games with a solid team effort, winning 25-8, 25-16, 25-9 on Thursday.
The first game said it all for the Cougars when Erin Brown led off with 19 consecutive service points and three aces, until the Lee Ladies broke up the rally with a kill from Kendra Scott. Bad passes, short spikes and a lack of communication from Lee proved to be its downfall.
“In the first match I tried to keep the girls serious and I pushed them more and more,” said Stuarts Draft coach Kami Meeteer. “I wanted them ready for anything.”
Not much happened on the Lee side of the court in the first with only two total kills in the game from Scott and Diandra Anderson.
The Cougars weren’t done pouncing on the Lee Ladies just yet. Aces from Linsay Iseli, Kamron Johnson and Brown kept the points coming in the second for Draft. The 5-foot, 2-inch Brown proved to be a powerhouse, not just in service, but also in setting with 13 assists. Brown had 25 total service points and nine aces.
“Erin’s always been a strong server, even in JV,” Meeteer said. “She definitely showed that tonight.”
Kills from Draft’s Aliya Stevenson and blocks from the two colossal 6 footers, Johnson and Callie Updike, kept Lee from seeing tallies on its side of the scoreboard.
Lee wasn’t going down without a fight. The Lee Ladies gave the Cougars a run for their money with digs from under the net, but Lee couldn’t finish what they started.
“We played really well and up to our level,” Meeteer said. “Lee has always been a good team, but I didn’t see much of their players out there.”
Draft (4-3, 2-0) faces Wilson Memorial on Monday while Lee travels to Spotswood on Tuesday.
