Wilson’s Guy will play at Va. Wesleyan
Wilson Memorial’s Kala Guy has found a new home court.
After months of waiting, the four-year Green Hornets starter said she is taking her powerful strike to Virginia Wesleyan College.
“I went last year and visited. ... I just fell in love with it,” Guy said. “I love the coach and its location.”
Virginia Wesleyan, located in Norfolk, tied for third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference this season and broke a school record with 23 wins.
Guy started her high school varsity career as a freshman and quickly adapted to the faster pace. The Green Hornets made the Region B tournament all four years that she was on the team and made it to the Group A semifinals in 2008. Wilson fell 3-1 to Strasburg in the semifinal match.
“At Wilson I was the rookie as a freshman, it will be the same thing next year,” Guy said. “It’s good I have that experience. This season I was the leader and I hope that doesn’t change, I still want to be a leader.”
Guy said her most memorable moment in a Wilson jersey was when the Hornets won the Region B championship in 2008, defeating defending Group A champion Strasburg in three games.
“I think winning regionals was crazy awesome,” she said. “It was pretty rewarding going to states, but when we won regional it was overwhelming.”
Though she did say that making the trip to the Group A tournament was the “perfect way to end her senior year.”
“Coming in as a freshman, to be on such a great team and that year we went to regions,” Guy said. “My junior year I was the captain and became the leader [and] helped guide the team.”
Guy said she was attracted to Virginia Wesleyan because of its size.
“It’s smaller,” she said. “I just don’t think being in a class with 400 students and professors not knowing your name would work. I like that it is really small and it’s far enough away that I can be away from home, but it’s close enough I can go home. I love the beach, too.”
Bridgewater, Christopher Newport and Roanoke were also possible choices for Guy.
She said she hopes to continue playing as an outside hitter.
“I think I’m still outside hitting, it just depends on the other people they bring in,” she said.
Guy also said she wasn’t guaranteed a starting spot on the team, but felt that she would be pushed to earn it.
“Its’ a good thing, I have to work for it,” she said.
