Giants win 4th district crown

In Spotswood, the Waynesboro boys swim team won its fourth straight district title Saturday in the Massanutten District Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Little Giants have 10 swimmers who made All-District.

Peter Bihl placed second in the 200-yard freestyle, Michael Mowen finished first in the 200-yard independent medley, breaking the district record set in 2007 by finishing with a time of 2 minutes, 7.5 seconds. Chris Figgatt took third in the race.

Michael McDevitt, Greg Manor, Chipper Riley, Mathew Jenny, Tyler Wood and Tim Bihl also placed in the meet. Mowen, Figgatt, Manor and Riley all broke a district record in the boys 200-yard medley relay with a 1:47.38.

The Waynesboro girls swim team took second place for the fifth straight year. 

Seven swimmers made All-District.

Vicky Andersen finished third in the 50-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle. She will be joined by Rachael McKenzie, Molly Ross and Bree Simonsen, who also made the All-District team. McKenzie, Ross, Scout McDevitt and Andersen placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Giants’ Katie Keefer placed first in the 200-yard IM. Keefer, Ross, Meredith Figgatt and McDevitt also received district honors and placed first in the 200-yard medley relay.

Keefer set a district record in the 100-yard backstroke with a 1:01.8. She eclipsed the 1:02.9 record that was set in 2005. McDevitt, Ross, Andersen and Keefer broke the district record, finishing with a time of 3:57.82

In the 200-yard freestyle, McDevitt (2:08) placed second, Ross (2:12) was third, Simonsen (2:23.67) was eighth and McKenzie (2:23.75) placed ninth.

Ross (1:16.98) placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke and Figgatt (1.22.56) placed fifth. In the girls 50-yard freestyle, Andersen placed third with a time of 27.80.

McDevitt took third in the girls 100-yard butterfly. Andersen took fourth with a time of 1:02 in the 100-yard freestyle. Teammate McKenzie (1:05) finished in ninth place in the race.

The Region III meet will be held Feb. 21 at James Madison University.
