Hornets keep on winning

FISHERSVILLE — There was little talk about the rivalry between Wilson Memorial and Riverheads. There was little time to discuss anything but the hitting and the sparkling pitching performance from Hornet pitcher Summer Ramsey, both which caused tongues to wag.

The Hornets (8-0 2-0 in the Shenandoah) may have kept comments about the opposition to a minimum, but the aluminum spoke volumes beneath the late afternoon sun as the squad buried the Gladiators 15-0 at home Tuesday.

Wilson, proving it earned that unblemished record, did not waste a moment to get on the board

The Hornets racked up nine hits in the first inning and scored 11 runs off Riverheads’ Haley Kirshnick.

Hornets skipper Maura Stout does not want her team to fall into complacency when it comes to a perfect record.

“I don’t like those words, we’re not perfect,” Stout said. “There will always be mistakes and we have to look to each game and we can’t just focus on our record.”

In the first inning, Amanda Bradley led off with double to left and Kayla Blair smashed a double up the middle. Sammy Parker followed by smacking a single to right for the 2-0 lead. Next, Leah Pagett smoked the ball over the center-field fence for a home run and the Hornets had a 4-0 lead.

For Riverheads, the inning would go on. With bases loaded, Serena Rohrbaugh hit a grounder with one out to make it 5-0. Then Bradley knocked in two more runs with a hit up the middle. When the inning ended, the home team was up by double digits, 11-0.

“We played good tonight, the hits were just there for us,” Pagett said.

Before it was over, Riverheads was down by 14 runs and Ramsey struck out nine before the game was put to rest.

“If I didn’t have the defense behind me I wouldn’t have done so well,” Ramsey said.

For the visiting team, it could only hope for the Hornets to stop its defensive precision and offensive explosion.

“We are a young team, and you learn something new every time you play a game,” said Riverheads assistant coach Breanne Weisenburger. “This is another learning experience.”

The Gladiators’ record fell to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in district play.

In the third inning, Riverheads made a pitching change and brought in flamethrower Bre McDearmon. She tried to stop any further damage, but in the fifth inning the Hornets stung again. Miller’s base hit to right field and Sammy Parker’s RBI triple up the middle. Pagett ripped a single to left field. McDearmon, a freshman with little varsity experience struck out three.

As far as Ramsey, she just does what she usually does on the diamond-striking out hitters.

“I throw a little of everything,” Ramsey said. “I just have to get out there and pitch my game.”
