SWOOPE — Wilson Memorial pulled away from its Shenandoah District rival Buffalo Gap late in the second half after going into intermission tied at two, defeating the Bison 4-2 and remaining undefeated on the season.

The Hornets, coming in fresh off a 2-1 victory over Riverheads the night before, were playing with some tired legs, but found a way to get things off and rolling early.

Wilson coach Scott Crist was pleased with his team’s performance after playing back-to-back games.

“The girls stepped up to the challenge tonight. It was a total team effort and I cannot be more proud of the way they played,” Crist said after the win. “I was worried about the girl’s hydration and their legs. We played such a physical game last night against Riverheads and for us to play equally as hard tonight was impressive.”

Wilson struck first in the opening half on a breakaway by Lindsay Suyes as she blasted a shot to the corner of the net. The goal struck a momentum boost for the Hornets and a few minutes later they were back celebrating another goal.

The Hornets were pressuring the Bison with all they had, and this time the speedy Angelica Thacker sprung past her defender and rocketed a shot past the helpless keeper letting the Green Hornets jump out to a quick 2-0 lead. The Bison would not lie down to their county rivals.

Three minutes after Thacker put Wilson up by a pair, the Bison found a way to get themselves back into contention.

Laura Knott received a quick pass from her teammate Aslan Tugman, and drilled the shot past the net minder. The goal by Knott brought a cheer from the Gap crowd, giving the Bison new life. The goal had deflated some of the Green Hornets’ energy as the Bison slowly crawled their way back into the mix.

Gap fed off the emotion of the Knott goal and continued to pressure the Hornets’ keeper. After a physical play in the box, the Bison were awarded a penalty kick that was taken by Carissa Ervine. She calmly placed the ball were the keeper was not and the Bison tied the game 2-2 late in the first half.

Wilson came out in the second half with the aggressiveness they had started with earlier in the match and before long, Suyes put in her second goal of the game giving the Hornets the 3-2 lead. The Bison tried to pressure the Green Hornets defense, but the Hornets stood strong and continued putting their own pressure on the Bison.

Deidre Deacon put the nail in the coffin late for Wilson, getting into the open field and running towards the corner to put in the shot. The goal doubled the Hornets’ lead to 4-2.
