Wilson keeps its confidence

FISHERSVILLE — Although Wilson lost the Region B Championship Friday night to George Mason, the team is still confident in their ability to play well at the Group A tournament Tuesday.

“The first thing we need to do is get healthy,” said Hornet coach Scott Crist who had a few girls wrapped in ice after the game. We’re going to stick with the style we’ve used all year.”

Crist said to change anything tactically this late in the season would just be confusing, so the game plan for states is going to be the same as it’s been all season long — to attack over the top and pass ahead to attack the 18.

“It’s nothing complex, but it fits the talent of the team,” Crist said who puts his offensive faith in the speed and skill of his forwards.

“I think we need to work together more and stay more focused,” said junior Angelica Thacker with a grin on her face that said she knew her team would be OK.

Hornet freshman Lindsay Suyes said the team would be able to compete at the state level if they just play like they usually do.

“We’re a great team. We play well together,” Suyes said. “We played well today, but when they scored we weren’t ready for it.”

“Knowing the team, we just need to recover and regroup this weekend,” Crist said. “We need to adjust from region play and be ready to play at the state level.”

Crist commented on how his team is young — consisting of mostly sophomores — they are mentally older than their grade level. This began to come through late in the game when the Hornets scored their only goal.

“When Holly [Bartley] scored we started to play hard again,” Suyes said.

“I’m confident we’ll respond in a positive way. I’m confident they’ll be ready,” Crist said.
