Waynesboro sweeps Cougars

It did not take long for Waynesboro to put the game in the books on Thursday night.
Three goals in the first eight minutes led the Little Giants past Stuarts Draft 7-0 in a Southern Valley District bout.
The Little Giants took the ball down field as soon as the opening whistle blew, and 45 seconds later Hugo Fernandez drilled a shot to the back of the net, giving the Little Giants the 1-0 lead.
“It was important for us to get off to a good start,” said Waynesboro head coach Bill Meicke. “Last time we played them, it took us a while to score. We were able to get to the net early and I think it really paid off.”
Before the Cougars even had time to regroup, Waynesboro (7-1, 4-0 Southern Valley) was at it again but this time it was Kyle Wright snapping a shot to the back of the onion bag.
The Little Giants were not done and the hot start was far from over.
With the score 2-0, and only seven minutes into the contest, Orlando Marin got into the scoring action for Waynesboro, putting it up 3-0 early in the first half.
“I thought the passing from our guys was excellent. They made some textbook passes to one another,” Meicke said. “We have had some games where we have scored early and then went twenty or thirty minutes without scoring, so I thought getting off to the hot start was just what we needed.”
The night went from bad to worse for Stuarts Draft (0-9, 0-4 Southern Valley). With a bench full of injured players standing on crutches, the last thing the Cougars needed was another player sidelined.
The Cougars suffered devastating losses when both Jacob Glover and Dennis Liu both left the game with injuries.
The Little Giants added four more goals in the second half as Wright and Alex Farrington each had two markers for Waynesboro in the win.
Waynesboro senior Kyle Wright believes that the team chemistry is at an all time high.
“Right now we are playing with incredible intensity every night out. We did a good job of talking out on the field tonight, something we lacked our last time out against Spotswood,” Wright said. “For us seniors we have been playing together for along time, and I think that chemistry between us is starting to show. Everything is clicking right now and we just have to keep playing together.”
The Cougars are still looking for their first win of the year and head coach Chris Loomis is looking to do the best he can with what he has available.
“We played as hard as we could. You have to give credit to Waynesboro they played great. They are a lot of fun to watch,” Loomis said. “You have to play with you got. We have a lot of injuries, but we still play hard.”
