STUARTS DRAFT — Keeper Matt Sundeen said earlier in the week that he was going to finish his senior year for Draft well. After the Cougars 1-0 shutout against Spotswood on Friday night showed that he was true to his word.
“It was a hard fought game on both ends,” Sundeen said. “But our defense was there and we made it happen, especially defenders Josh Coble and Chris Mahanes, fought hard all night.”
Draft got on the board early against Trailblazers keeper Mike Bullis when Tielor Dietrich crosskicked the ball into the left side of the net for the only goal in the game.
Spotswood’s (8-6-1, 3-4 Massanutten) defense blocked any further damage from occurring, but it’s offense couldn’t overcome the Cougars’ defense.
“Both sides played a good game, and our defense did a great job for us,” said coach Chris Loomis. “We are hoping we can carry into next week’s game against Fort Defiance. I’m happy about this victory, it was hard fought.”
He would also like his keeper to perform like he did on Friday night.
“His performance was stellar and that’s what you get is shutout ball,” Loomis said. “He can get in there and stop the ball, he’s just good.”
Draft (7-6-1, 3-4 Southern Valley) has locked up the third seed in the District and will visit Fort Defiance on May 16 in the first round, but will have to play Rockbridge to end its Southern Valley schedule on Tuesday. Waynesboro has already locked up the first-seed and Fort Defiance is seeded second.
Loomis is not worried about the tournament or facing the Southern Valley’s second seed, but is taking it one game at a time.
“Our minds are not really there yet,” Loomis said. “We need to focus on these next two games and then we will focus on Fort.”
Sundeen is hoping that the shutout will continue into next weeks contest.
“I hope we can can do this well against Fort, but we just have to keep working hard to do that,” Sundeen said.
