BASYE — Riverheads’ freshman Luke Humphries had one bad hole at the Region B Golf Tournament on Monday. But a triple bogey at the No. 12 hole at Bryce Resort wasn’t enough to deter the talented Gladiator golfer.

Humphries went on to post a six-over, 77 on a picture perfect day at the resort.

With that score, Humphries qualified for the Group A Tournament at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian later this month.

“He’s Mr. Consistent,” said Riverheads’ coach Scott Cassell. “That’s the goal he’s wanted all year.”

Still, Humphries wasn’t completely happy.

“My round was up and down,” Humphries said. “I was just trying to take it one step at a time.”

Included in his round was a birdie at the par 4, fourth hole. Humphries shot a 38 on the front side and a 39 on the back nine. Humphries’ 77 was the third best round of the day and qualified him for the All-Region B team.

The rest of the Gladiators didn’t fare as well. But the Red Pride freshman was glad to have familiar company.

“I’m glad the team came here,” Humphries said. “It helped me to have them.”

The state tournament is a two-day event on Oct. 19 and 20.

“To be All-State, Luke will need to shoot right around par which he’s capable of,” Cassell said. “The best part of his game is his attitude. He’s so even-keeled. He doesn’t play like a freshman.”

Chatham and Appomattox, both from the Dogwood District, came in with the best team scores, shooting 313 and 322 respectively.

Riverheads finished with a team total of 373 as Britt Failes came in with a 93, followed by Ben Folsom with an even 100 and Dalton Campbell with 103.
