MIDLOTHIAN – Riverheads freshman golfer Luke Humphries shot a round of 82 on the first day of the Group A state golf tournament at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian.

“He had no double bogies and he didn’t three-putt any greens,” Riverheads coach Scott Cassell said. “He had a really good round, but he doesn’t feel like he played up to his potential. As a freshman, that’s wonderful. He’s tied for 22nd and you couldn’t ask for more from a freshman here.”

Humphries round of 41-41 wasn’t spectacular, but as Cassell mentioned, he didn’t force the issue and shot a solid number on the par-72, 6,677-yard course. Humphries’ day was the second best out of the six Region B individuals, as Randolph-Henry’s Daniel Adams shot an 81, thanks to a 38 on the front nine.

Humphries is nine shots back of the lead. Radford’s Zeke Shaffer and James River’s Korey Watts each shot a 73. Humphries’ second round begins today with a 9:10 a.m. tee time on the 10th hole.
