STAUNTON — As Robert E. Lee quarterback Devante White took the field on Friday night, he knew he was going to be battling more than the Broadway Gobblers. He was battling the flu, but White did not allow his sickness to hamper his play and instead carried the Lee football team to a 36-24 win.
White was involved in all five of Lee’s touchdowns. He rushed for three scores, took a kickoff all the way to the house and added a passing TD. His 260 rushing yards led the Lee offense.
“Devante [White] came into the pre-game meal tonight with a high temperature and the flu, but he sucked it up and played a great ball game,” Lee coach David Tibbs said.
White’s first score came on a 32-yard passing TD to Chris Williams to open the scoring. His only other score of the first half came on a 20-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter to give the Leemen a 14-7 advantage.
On the opening kickoff of the second half White blew the game wide-open taking the kickoff in for the touchdown. White added a 17-yard TD run late in the quarter.
“I give all the credit to my offensive line, they made the blocks for me,” White said.
With a 29-24 lead in the fourth, the Leemen were faced with a fourth down situation. White kept the ball and pushed through the Gobblers line for the touchdown.
for the final score of the game.
Broadway (3-2, 0-0 Massanutten) kept the game close all night with the play of quarterback Adam Caplinger and running back Joel Phillips, who carried the Gobblers for most of the night. Caplinger had two rushing TD’s and Phillips had a 65-yard TD run for the Gobblers in the loss.
Lee (4-1, 2-0 Southern Valley) will take on Spotswood High School this Friday.
