STAUNTON
On Friday night, in front of a packed stadium at Gypsy Hill Park, Robert E. Lee quarterback Dae’ Quan Scott was a blur of navy blue.
The quarterback with running back legs had four touchdowns and assaulted the Fort Defiance defense in the Leemen’s season opening 40-18 win.
In the first half, Scott had a 22-yard run that led to a touchdown.
Scott also ran 37-yard, 79-yard and 11-yard touchdowns before the contest was over.
The question was asked by a radio personality in the press box, “Can this kid be stopped?”
“I do what I can do,” Scott said after the game. “Every time I get the ball, I’m going to make something happen. When I first came out for the game, I was a little shifty, but after the second half, I cleared my mind of everything and it helped me play better.”
Scott also has the green light and respect from his team. When Scott moves down the field his army follows.
“There’s no doubt that he is the heart and soul of this team, he’s our leader,” lineman William Veney said. “We all work together, and we don’t mind following him. If he leads us, we will fight, and that’s what our defense did. He is a motivator.”
After Scott completed his junior year he totaled 81 passes for a total of 509 yards. He rushed for over 1,000 yards and helped his team to win the Southern Valley District title.
This season, Scott said he was not worried about being overconfident after his past achievements.
“I can say that this team is never cocky,” Scott said. “This is a new year. I don’t think that there is any over confidence in me or the team.”
Maybe there isn’t an air of bravado, but people are paying attention to the former running back.
“He’s quick and he can carry a team,” Veney said. “Once he gets going, there’s no stopping him.”
Scott wants his team to rely on him as their leader.
“I want them [team] to jump on my back,” Scott said, “and I will get the job done.”
