STAUNTON – Robert E. Lee’s combination of passing and rushing demolished Fluvanna County 54-10 on Friday.
The Flyin’ Flucos started off on a positive note with an early touchdown from a Keith Pillow’s 20-yard run, but the Leemen answered back with Terrell Mickens flying into the end zone. The first quarter ended with the Flucos up 7-6, but the rest of the game wouldn’t embody the first.
Dae’ Quan Scott started off the second quarter for Lee with a 38-yard touchdown and, to make up for the missed extra point earlier, Scott drove in a two-point conversion to take the lead. After Fluvanna turned over the ball at Lee’s 45-yard line, Scott commanded the offense with a pass to Michael Carper for 21 yards, a hand off to Mickens for another 24, and then rushed in the touchdown himself. The Leemen scored three more times and Scott had over 100 rushing yards before the half.
“We’re improving. I was disappointed at the start, but we just got to get better,” said Robert E. Lee coach David Tibbs. “We wanted to prove that we could throw and Dae’Quan can throw really well.”
Scott wasn’t done running over the Flucos yet. A 95-yard run into the end zone brought the score to 47-7 with over 18 minutes left to play.
“I just had to get us out of the end zone,” Scott said. “The line made a hole and I saw it, I just got to execute.”
With Scott out of the game the rest of the Leemen took over on the field.
“I just did my stuff for the team. The line did their job, that’s the best they played so far,” Scott said.
Devante White took Scott’s place and immediately made a 40-yard run for another touchdown to end the third quarter.
“We got Fluvanna spread out and it opened up for us,” Tibbs said.
The Leemen could keep the Flucos from scoring for only so long until a 31-yard field goal with 20 seconds on the clock ended the game.
“Fluvanna came out hyped up in warm-ups and they played us hard,” Tibbs said. “I’m proud of our guys but we got to do a better job of getting off the field.”
Lee will face Harrisonburg next Friday, a well-known rivalry that the guys are aching to compete in.
“We came out here and played great but next week it’s on,” Scott said.
