GAME OF THE WEEK: Fort, Waynesboro ready for ‘dogfight’

Waynesboro and Fort Defiance have not won a district game this season, but that will change tonight for one of the teams Little Giants coach Steve Isaacs has not changed his tone sticking to what he has said before every game.

“We’re preparing for them like anybody else,” Isaacs said. “It’s a district ball game and it is homecoming, so we will try to limit the distractions as much as we can, but as you can see it’s the same stuff, different day for us,” Isaacs said during Tuesday’s practice.

The Giants will be missing some depth in their offensive line with Chaz Crews and Kendall Sweet sidelined with injuries. Sweet will be out for two weeks. Isaacs will utilize what he does have.

“We are expanding our single-wing a little bit. It is more of a necessity because of healthy bodies,” Isaacs said.

The Little Giants (1-7, 0-3 Southern Valley) are keeping their heads up despite the numbers this season.

“It’s the same crew. It’s not a whiney and sad football team when you come out here with them,” Isaacs said. “They don’t like to lose, but their not discouraged. They still come out on Monday and work.”

As far as tonight, Isaacs looks forward to coaching against Fort’s Dale Spitzer.

“Dale is a good guy,” Isaacs said. “He and I are the dinosaurs of the area. We are older than dirt, but I look forward in competing against him.”

The Indians (1-6, 0-2 Southern Valley) suffered a 24-13 lost to Turner Ashby on Oct. 10.

Spitzer said his team played hard against the Knights and were going to use their last three games of the season as a springboard. From the Indians’ point of view, it will be a battle on the field.

“It’s going to be a dogfight,” Spitzer said. “I think Waynesboro has a good offense and it’s going to be a pretty tough game for us.”

With the season winding down, Spitzer would like to see a district win.

“I think Waynesboro wants this district win as much as we do,” Spitzer said. “It’s their homecoming game, so I think they will be even more ready to win.”
