Casto won 100th game at R’heads on Friday

Riverheads veteran football coach Robert Casto collected his 100th win with the Gladiators on Friday with a 28-0 win against Wilson Memorial.

Over the last 13 years, Casto has put together an overall winning record of 100-43 as a head coach in Greenville. He has led the Gladiators to five Shenandoah District Championships, nine regional appearances and two Group A, Division 1 championships in 2000 and 2006.

Casto recorded a losing season during his first year with the Red Pride in 1996 when his team posted a 0-10 record. The team did better during the 1997 season and finished 3-7. Riverheads celebrated its first winning season under Casto in 1998 with an 8-3 finish.

Casto was named Group A Coach of the Year by the Associated Press in 1999. That season put Greenville on the map and the Gladiators were crowned Shenandoah District champs. The team returned in 2000 and enjoyed a perfect season of 14-0, winning the Group A, Division 1

During his tenure Casto was selected five times as the Shenandoah District Coach of the year. In 2007, the Gladiators were 8-3 and the team earned a Region B playoff spot.

Casto coached at Chincoteague High School in 1991 and posted a 5-5 record. Casto is 105-48 for his career.

Casto was unavailable for comment on Wednesday.
