PENN LAIRD — After one quarter of play on Friday night, Waynesboro had a 7-6 lead over the stunned Spotswood Trailblazers, but the lead would not hold for long as the Blazers put up 41 second-quarter points on way to a 61-13 win.
The Blazers took their first possession and marched downfield as the nine play drive was capped off by a Nick Wimer 8-yard TD run to put the Blazers on the board first.
After the Spotswood touchdown, Waynesboro had their best offensive drive of the young season. Tyler Briggs took the first snap for five yards, but on second down Bryant Carter took off for a 37-yard run.
On the next play Kevin Jackson took the handoff 22 yards for another Waynesboro first down inside the Blazers five-yard line. Briggs did the rest, following his offensive line in for the touchdown. The Little Giants added the extra point and took the lead 7-6 after the first quarter.
“I think we came out and played good football,” said Waynesboro coach Steve Isaacs. “We are getting better as each week goes by. People have to understand that we are still young and wet behind the ears.”
The one-point lead was the first time Waynesboro has been ahead in a game this season.
Wimer did most of the damage for the Blazers with four rushing TD’s and one receiving for a total of five first half touchdowns. Waynesboro turned the ball over twice on three offensive plays in the quarter, giving the Blazers good field position both times.
“I have to give a lot of credit to Waynesboro they came out and got after us,” said Spotswood coach Eric Phillips. “They played a really competitive game with us until they went through that stretch in the second quarter with the two fumbles.”
In the second half things improved on the offensive side of the ball for the Little Giants, but the injury bug continued to hurt Waynesboro. With an already depleted sideline the Little Giants had numerous players go down with injuries.
Waynesboro scored for the second time of the evening on a 61-yard touchdown run by Jackson. That would be the final time the Little Giants would score on the night. The Blazers added two more scores on a touchdown run and a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone.
“We can’t start jumping ship and pointing fingers. We are going to put this game behind us and come back to practice Monday and get ready for Robert E. Lee on Friday,” said Isaacs.
Waynesboro (0-3, 0-0 Southern Valley) will begin district play next Friday on the road at Lee.
