Robert E. Lee was hungry after Monday night’s loss against Turner Ashby, bouncing back against rival Waynesboro for a 47-0 win Friday night.
Lee used big plays to pull ahead early against the Little Giants.
With the score 7-0 in Lee’s favor, Erick Loya punted the ball to Lee’s Dae’ Quan Scott. Scott broke several tackles and sprinted up the middle of the field. With just a lineman between him and the end zone, Scott ran towards the sideline and in for the 58-yard punt return touchdown.
The Leemen came out throwing early as Scott threw for 60 yards in a first quarter that saw the Leemen put 23 points on the scoreboard.
“We are going to throw the ball more,” Lee coach David Tibbs said. “You can print that.”
The second quarter started the way the first ended for Lee.
Getting the ball on Waynesboro’s 48-yard line, Scott completed a 33-yard pass to Adam Tibbs. After Scott’s five-yard run, Tibbs caught another ball across the middle for a nine-yard gain.
After a holding penalty, Lee had second-and-goal from the 20-yard line. That’s when Scott scampered to the outside, breaking the tackle of one of Waynesboro’s linebackers, running towards the corner of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown scamper, the second of five Scott touchdowns in the game.
“[The team] had a good week of practice,” Tibbs added. “We worked at it. Our kids were hungry. We were upset when we walked off the field Monday night, but how are you going to respond to adversity? The hunger for wanting to win and getting the taste of losing out of your mouth is the cure for not wanting to lose any more.”
Lee tried to utilize the passing game again in the second half, but Waynesboro wouldn’t give the Leemen offense a chance. The Little Giants ran the clock down, giving the Leemen only four plays on offense in the quarter.
With just over eight minutes to play in the game, Lee once again broke off a huge offensive play. Scott took the designed run off the right side of the line, sprinting up the sideline, running away from the defense for a 64-yard touchdown.
Scott ended the game with 127 yards on the ground to go along with 117 yards through the air.
Waynesboro couldn’t jumpstart its offense all game, making eight first downs the entire game with zero coming in the fourth quarter.
This gave the Leemen one more chance to score in the fourth quarter.
With the second string offense in, Lee’s Devante White rushed to the left for seven yards. After Robert Stephen collected six yards up the middle and another designed quarterback run for White picked up 14 more, Stephen busted up the middle, outrunning the secondary for a 26-yard touchdown run to seal the game at 47-0 with a minute and a half to play.
Lee plays host to Stuarts Draft next Friday while Waynesboro travels to Broadway for a non-district match up.
