FISHERSVILLE — Robert E. Lee cruised past Wilson Memorial in the final game of the regular season, taking a 35-17 win on Friday for Lee’s third straight Southern Valley district championship.

On Friday night the Waynesboro Little Giants traveled to Fort Defiance for their last game of the season and as the purple and gold headed to the locker room at halftime, down 25-0 and facing a 1-9 season, many Waynesboro supporters probably began wondering an all too familiar question: What will it take to return this once proud program to prominence?

FORT DEFIANCE — Fort Defiance used a 19-point second quarter to get by Waynesboro on Friday night, 25-13, ending their season with two wins.

LURAY — The Riverheads Gladiators cleared another hurdle in their quest for the Region B playoffs Friday night, winning a 35-28 shootout over Luray in Shenandoah District football action.

LEXINGTON — D.J. Hines and Darius Woodson each had three touchdowns for Stuarts Draft in a 41-21 drubbing over Rockbridge on Friday night to close out the regular season.

MT. JACKSON — A coach once said that defense wins championships.

GREENVILLE — Riverheads running back Cory Sandridge scored five touchdowns on short and long runs Friday, keying the Gladiators to a 42-14 Shenandoah District victory over Stonewall Jackson.

FISHERSVILLE — Jared Stipic recovered a fumble at Wilson’s four-yard line and Trevor Fisher had a late interception as Fort Defiance outlasted Wilson Memorial, 28-26 in a Southern Valley District football contest Friday night.

The Stuarts Draft Cougars continued their playoff push Friday night by defeating Waynesboro 34-7 to win the Battle for the Ball for the fourth consecutive year, spoiling the Little Giants senior night in the process.

Fishburne’s Chet Berry threw for 309 yards and scored four touchdowns, including one on the ground in the first half, but his impressive stats weren’t enough to help the Caissons survive the second.

SWOOPE — Matt Gregory’s 79-yard interception return for a touchdown as time expired in the first half, capped off a 21-point second quarter for Buffalo Gap. The Bison were able stop the heavy passing attack of Central of Woodstock, keeping the pass happy spread offense to just six points in a 28-6 win.

After a scare from Fort Defiance last week, Robert E. Lee bounced back in a big way on Friday night, defeating Rockbridge County 34-7. Junior quarterback Devante White, who left last week’s game with an injury, played exceptionally for the Leemen, running for 179 yards and two touchdowns, while passing for another.

STUARTS DRAFT — As the saying goes all good things must come to an end, and for three Stuarts Draft seniors the moment was surreal as they were carried off the football field Friday night.

FORT DEFIANCE — Terrell Mickens ensured that the Southern Valley District-leading Robert E. Lee Leemen would leave Fort Defiance with a win on a rainy Friday night, as the junior running back and wide receiver filled in at yet another offensive position – quarterback – and led his team to a rousing 27-20 victory.

Fishburne is almost set to make its second appearance in the Capital Area Football Conference Championship game after downing Fredericksburg Christian 42-25 on Friday afternoon.

SHENANDOAH — For the Buffalo Gap Bison, the game that could’ve slipped away into the dreary Page County skies didn’t.

WOODSTOCK — Dreary, rainy conditions favor the running game and the strength of Riverheads is the rush.

LEXINGTON — Wilson Memorial played almost perfect football with only one turnover at the tail end of the game, beating Rockbridge 41-20 in Monday night football action.

FORT DEFIANCE — A couple of big plays could have changed a Homecoming full of what might have been’s into one of the biggest upsets of the 2009 football season in the area.

STUARTS DRAFT — As the final whistle blew on Friday night, Stuarts Draft coach Rod Bowers looked at the final score of 58-31 in favor of the Blue Streaks and completely disregarded the 27-point defeat.

SWOOPE – On a Homecoming night fit for neither man nor beast, the Bison and the Bulldogs battled to the last play.

GREENVILLE – Demetrius Younger is a beast.

More times than not, the team that wins the turnover battle also wins the war. That was the case Friday night as Broadway turned two Waynesboro first-quarter turnovers into touchdowns in route to a 45-20 victory, keeping Waynesboro winless for the season.

Missed opportunities and key turnovers spelled doom for Fishburne Military School on Monday afternoon.

STAUNTON — Friday night featured the top two teams from the Southern Valley and Massanutten Districts. The undefeated Spotswood Trailblazers marched into Staunton to take on one-loss Robert E. Lee and put up 15 fourth-quarter points to defeat the Leemen 29-10.

BROADWAY— “It doesn’t matter how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get back up,” said Stuarts Draft coach Rod Bowers.

HARRISONBURG — Even without star running back Michael Holmes for most of the game, the Harrisonburg Blue Streaks were able to get by the Fort Defiance Indians on Friday night, 34-12.
