Fishburne’s Marquise Barfield shoots a layup during the first half against Progressive Christian on Tuesday in Waynesboro.
Marquise Barfield could only throw the ball up as he fell on his back — then lie on the floor when the celebration began.
With less than three seconds left on the clock, Barfield grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the two points that Fishburne needed to defeat Progressive Christian 90-88 in overtime during the Caisson Classic.
“I had to get rid of it real quick, so I just shot it and it went in” Barfield said.
Playing in their final game of the season, the Caissons gave the crowd of mostly cadets something to remember them by on Tuesday night. Less than a second before the end of regulation, Joel Brokenbrough tipped in the tying shot that sent the game into overtime.
In the extra five-minute period, Progressive Christian tied the game at 88 in the closing seconds, forcing the Caissons to rush its final basket. After the Caissons’ missed their first shot, Barfield was there to make the tip.
“If anyone is going to make a tip-in shot, it’s [Barfield],” said Fishburne assistant coach Eric Brown. “If there is one guy that’s isn’t going to be scared, it is him.”
Donte Morales, who was named the game’s outstanding player, scored 31 points in the win and was a perfect 7-for-7 in the first half. Morales scored 17 points in the first, including three 3-pointers that kept the Caissons neck-and-neck with PCA.
“It was an emotional game, but I think our team stayed focused,” Morales said. “There were times we fought through adversity and made the plays we needed to make.”
Fishburne led 44-36 after the first half, but missed several key shots to start the second allowing PCA to climb back into the game.
“We missed 100 layups,” said Fishburne coach Ed Huckaby. “We had shots in the paint the problem was we just didn’t score.”
