SWOOPE — This weekend is epic for Buffalo Gap’s Renee Burford.

Three years ago Jeremy Hartman said he wanted to add consistency to a struggling Robert E. Lee girls basketball team.

This season, Sara Lamneck is seeing double.

Since the Virginia High School League moved the girls basketball season from the fall to the winter in 2002, the Lee Ladies have sat home while their male counterpart enjoyed basking in the Group AA glow.

Buffalo Gap vs. West Point

Buffalo Gap will face Region A runner-up West Point on Saturday at the Convocation Center in Harrisonburg.

LYNCHBURG — Robert E. Lee erased a 13-point, second-half deficit to overcome Lord Botetourt in the closing minutes of action to win 58-56 in the Region III, Divison 3 championship on Saturday

HARRISONBURG – Altavista cruised past a fatigued Riverheads 41-29 on Saturday in the Region B, Division 1 championship.

HARRISONBURG — Winning one state championship is difficult enough, repeating is even more demanding and requires belief, discipline and some breaks along the way.

HARRISONBURG – It wasn’t supposed to end this way for Buffalo Gap’s seniors as the Bison fell 49-44 to fifth-seeded Altavista in the Region B, Division I semifinals Friday at Eastern Mennonite University.

HARRISONBURG – Riverheads stopped a speedy and scrappy Cumberland team 54-35 in the Region B, Division 1 semifinals at Eastern Mennonite University on Friday to earn a trip to the Group A, Division 1 tournament.

STUARTS DRAFT — For the first time since its two-point Group AA final loss to Blacksburg in 2002, the Robert E. Lee girls basketball team is back in the state tournament. 

The R.E. Lee girls basketball team got a little boost the day before its Region III, Division 3 semifinal game at Stuarts Draft.

HARRISONBURG – Buffalo Gap will see another state tournament as it beat Stonewall Jackson 50-45 in the Region B, Division 1 semifinal round Thursday.

SWOOPE — In a rough-and-tumble basketball game that could have been promoted by Don King, Nelson County put Buffalo Gap on the ropes early in the third quarter.

RINGGOLD — The outcome of the Region B, Division 2 quarterfinal was determined well before the final buzzer sounded in Dan River’s smashing 93-58 victory over Wilson Memorial on Wednesday night.

GREENVILLE — Winning is the best medicine.

SWOOPE — After a close battle in the first half, Buffalo Gap ran away from Riverheads in the fourth to defeat the Gladiators 51-33 in the quarterfinals of the Region B, Division 1 tournament.

ROANOKE – In an evenly matched game, Northside came away with a win off a Neil Brown shot at the buzzer in overtime to defeat Fort Defiance 37-36 in the Region III, Division 3 semifinals.

DALEVILLE —  Stuarts Draft had a welcome message on Lord Botetourt High School’s scoreboard before the opening of the Region III, Division 3 quarterfinals but it did not last as the Cougars lost 50-46 to the Cavaliers on Tuesday night.

STAUNTON — Robert E. Lee had all but locked up its game with Brookville on Tuesday night.

Sara Lamneck paced the Bison with 15 points. Brittany Heizer led Riverheads with 14.

Katie Yancey led the way for the Cougars with 18 points.

STAUNTON—This time, it came to an end on the hardwood instead of the gridiron.

In Richmond on Monday, legendary R.E. Lee boys basketball coach Paul Hatcher was recognized by the Virginia House of Delegates.

HARRISONBURG — Riverheads had its best week ever, upsetting second seed Wilson Memorial on Thursday and then defeating top seed Buffalo Gap 62-51 on Friday night.
