Stuarts Draft picks JV hoops coach
Former Fort Defiance girls varsity assistant Damian Fink will take the bench for the Cougars boys JV basketball program, the school announced Oct. 3. Fink worked for the Indians for the last two seasons as an assistant girls basketball coach under Laura Bowman.

Diggs to take over for retired Charlie
Waynesboro JV boys basketball coach Sidney Diggs will replace Doug Charlie as a varsity assistant coach The News Virginian has learned. Charlie stepped down after the last school term.

Devon Brown named AP player of the year
RICHMOND — She scored more points than any Group AA girl in state history, and finished her career with 19 points and 12 rebounds in the state championship game.
Devon Brown of Waynesboro didn’t finish her career by raising the championship trophy, but sports writers from around the state gave her a nice consolation prize: The 5-foot-11 senior was the runaway selection as The Associated Press Group AA player of the year for 2008.

Nelson County’s Brown leads 2008 All-Group A boys team
For the first time, the Virginia High School League split Group A into two divisions in basketball this season, producing two boys state champions.
But only one of them had Thomas Brown. The Nelson County senior averaged 24 points, seven rebounds, 6.5 assists and three steals as the Governors went 30-1 and won the first Group A, Division 1 state championship in school history. Brown had 16 points in the championship game and was selected the AP’s Group A player of the year by sports writers around the state. Riverheads’ Jeremy Heizer made the second team.
