Wilson girls win Old Valley Challenge
In Penn Laird, the Wilson Memorial girls cross country team won the Old Valley Challenge on Thursday afternoon at Spotswood High School.
The Green Hornets posted a final score of 48 points, beating Stuarts Draft for the top spot. The Cougars led a tight race for second with 61 points. Turner Ashby took third with 64, Harrisonburg was fourth with 67 points, Rockbridge finished fifth with 111 points and Spotswood took sixth with 150 points.
For the boys, Spotswood dominated the race with 28 points, with Harrisonburg taking second and Turner Ashby third. Robert E. Lee led the Southern Valley District schools with 96 points, Rockbridge took fifth with 113 points, Waynesboro was sixth with 159 points and Wilson finished seventh with 187 points.
Broadway’s Allison Corbo won the girls event, but the Gobblers did not field a full team. Harrisonburg’s Tabea Zimmermann took second with a 21:07 run.
Wilson’s Katie and Elizabeth Barnes finished third and fourth respectively to led the Green Hornets’ charge.
Morgan Holbert was the first Cougar to cross the stripe with a 22:37 for 11th place. Lee’s Felicia Shifflett finished in 18th with a 23:43. Waynesboro’s Claire Brooks finished the day with a 23:48 for a 20th place finish.
Lee’s Dalton Byerly led the Southern Valley runners in the boys race with a 17:51 seventh-place finish. Waynesboro’s Brett Sundean took 21st to lead the Little Giants. Wilson’s Preston Williams finished in 30th with a 19:38 and Stuarts Draft’s Brett Talley took 36th.
