Waynesboro gives up 33 points in third quarter, lose to Lee

STAUNTON - It's hard to believe that Waynesboro led Robert E. Lee at halftime.

The Leemen scored 33 unanswered points in the third quarter, erasing a Little Giant 22-17 first-half lead to win the Southern Valley District rivalry game 57-22.

"We just ran out of gas," said Waynesboro coach Steve Isaacs, "We were playing flat and had nothing in the tank in the second half. I can't make any excuse, there was just nothing left in the tank. The kids were out there, but when you are so damn tired it makes tackling those halfbacks a lot harder."

After Waynesboro's Steven Brown added up 115 yards in the first half and scored three touchdowns, the Leemen released one of their superstars, Rajah Jenkins, who ran for 221.

"We grabbed onto the train and the train was taking us places," Lee Coach David Tibbs said about Brown. "After halftime we decided to get after him before he got going."

Waynesboro's demise started after the Leemen's Michel Steele intercepted a Brown pass on the Giants' first possession of the third quarter. Steele picked the pass and returned it for a 50-yard touchdown.

After forcing a Giant three-and-out, the Leemen scored again on a Jenkins' 20-yard scamper, and the rest of the quarter went about the same. Jenkins also scored on runs of 34 yards, 22 yards and a 40 yarder in the third quarter alone.

While the Leemen couldn't stop the Giants' offensive attacks early, Waynesboro was never allowed to enter the end zone in the second half.

"We were on our heels," Tibbs said. "It's hard to simulate what Steve does. They executed well and kicked our tails but the credit goes to the defensive coordinators."

Lee scored one touchdown in fourth stanza, with Ryan Shull running in from 5 yards. Lee might have had the chance to add more points to the board, but by VHSL rule the game clock did not stop after Lee was up by more than 35 points.

In the first quarter the Waynesboro defense was stellar, only allowing three points.

The Giants did not react well to the quick change in score.

"We went in feeling good about ourselves, but things went flat so quick," Isaacs said. "How do you react- I guess we saw we didn't react very well, but that will be fixed."

Lee can't enjoy its win over the Giants for too long. Their next game is against Stuarts Draft and it could be the deciding game for the Southern Valley District title.

"We are going to enjoy this right now and start thinking of Draft tomorrow," Tibbs said.

Brown scored all three of the Little Giants' touchdowns and Terrell Thompson ran for 127 yards.
