HARRISONBURG – Stuarts Draft’s Christina Fenske was easy to find at the Group AA track and field championship on Friday night. Her rainbow-colored knee socks were not easily missed and neither was her domination in high jump. Fenske placed first with a 5-foot, 4-inch jump.
“I joined track two years ago. I really wasn’t into it that much,” Fenske said. “But I really started to love it – especially the high jump. I finished last year in ninth place, so to place first is really exciting.”
In the triple jump Waynesboro track coach Ed Driskill was thrilled about his jumpers showing at the event. Will Walter and Tim Brown are in constant competition with each other and on Friday night, Walter ended up on top with a second-place jump in the triple jump. Brown, the Region III triple jump champion, finished third.
“This is the first time in a long time that we have ever finished second and third,” Driskill said. “It has been a long time since we finished this well. Last year we finished third and fifth. It’s great that we had two who both finished well in the same district. I have no complaints. Anything else we get tomorrow will be gravy.”
Walter and Brown are both seniors.
“This is my last time to compete in the triple jump,” Walter said. “I’m happy I did well.”
In the girls triple jump, Robert E. Lee’s Karissa Jenkins finished in second. Lee’s Chris Williams will be seeded fifth after running a 22.80 in the 200-meter.
In the discus, Fort Defiance’s Katie Cummings placed fifth with a 122-06 throw.
“I wasn’t really happy the way that I threw tonight. I hope to do better in the shotput,” Cummings said.
The Group AA meet will continue today at 9 a.m. with the rest of the finals.
