GREENVILLE - For the first time, the Buffalo Gap competition cheer squad advanced to regionals, capturing second place Saturday at the Shenandoah District Cheerleading Competition held at Riverheads High School.

Bison coach Tammy Carter, who was a member of one of the first cheer teams at the school, was impressed with her team’s performance.

“We have 20 very dedicated girls,” Carter said. “They proved today to themselves and everyone else that cheerleading is a sport.”

After the six district teams completed their round one routines, the Bison, along with Central of Woodstock and Page County, were the three highest-scoring teams.

Each of those teams advanced to the Region B championship in two weeks at Strasburg High School.

The Bison executed a crisp routine without any major deductions, finishing behind district champion Central and ahead of Page County.

“They stuck their stunts today and were sharp,” Carter said. “We overcame some swine flu and other difficulties to pull through. The routine was clean and tight.”

Bison cheerleaders Jenny Gregory and Brittany Wood were chosen to the All-Shenandoah District first team, while Christina Kent, Jenna Dameron and Courtney Blair were second-team selections.

For host Riverheads, Ivy Fultz was chosen to the first team while Taylor Heizer was a second-team choice.

The Bison will face even tougher competition in two weeks.

“That will be a whole different level,” Carter said.
