Waynesboro High School has hired two track coaches to take over the Waynesboro program.

Little Giants football offensive coordinator and wrestling coach Alec Gunn will lead the outdoor track team next spring and Earth Science teacher Tim Wion was hired to coach indoor track.

Gunn ran track while attending Waynesboro as a student and when he found out about the vacancy, he jumped on the opportunity to lead the outdoor track team.

“It’s my first year coaching track and I’m looking forward to getting out,” Gunn said. “It will be nice and warm and track is a little bit more laid back.”

Gunn and Wion replaced longtime Waynesboro coach Ed Driskill. Driskill led the Little Giants track program for 27 years and the cross country team for 24 years.

“I knew coach Driskill was leaving and retiring. You can’t replace him,” Gunn said. “But they are great shoes to follow behind.”

Gunn said that track opens up an opportunity to work with all different types of athletes.

“It’s great to be able to get a wider variety of athletes and just seeing what they can do,” Gunn said.

Messages left by The News Virginian for Wion were not returned.
