MIDLOTHIAN – In his first experience in the Group A state golf tournament, Riverheads freshman Luke Humphries exceeded many expectations by shooting the best score of the Region B golfers, finishing with a 22-over par 166 after an 84 in the second round of the two-day tournament at Independence Golf Club.

The future of Waynesboro High School golf grew continuously brighter Monday as freshman Brennan Lloyd made his way around the Winton Country Club during the Regional tournament. Despite the fact that his round of 86 was not good enough to move him onto the Group AA tournament, the character that was forged and the lessons that were learned will go a long way in making him and his team more successful.

AMHERST — Robert E. Lee’s Tommy Price will be the lone Southern Valley representative at next week’s Group AA golf tournament at Williamsburg National Golf Club. The senior shot a seven-over 78 at the Region III tournament at Winton Country Club on Monday, earning him the final qualifying spot on a day that saw the Lee team’s season end.

BASYE — Riverheads’ freshman Luke Humphries had one bad hole at the Region B Golf Tournament on Monday. But a triple bogey at the No. 12 hole at Bryce Resort wasn’t enough to deter the talented Gladiator golfer.

HARRISONBURG — While Stonewall Jackson had already punched their ticket to Monday’s Region B Tournament by virtue of winning the Shenandoah District regular season title, the second seed from the district was very much up in the air as the six teams teed off Monday in blustery conditions at Heritage Oaks Golf Club.

LEXINGTON —Fort Defiance’s Robert Hanna drove the ball 185 feet from the pin on the par-five final hole Wednesday morning at the Lexington Country Club during the Southern Valley District gold meet.

In Staunton, the Waynesboro golf team won the Augusta County Shootout on Thursday night at Staunton Country Club, shooting a 162 as a team. Wilson (163) finished second followed by R.E. Lee (168), Fort Defiance (170), Riverheads (190), Stuarts Draft (205) and Buffalo Gap (212).

At Gypsy Hill Golf Course, Central’s David Hoye and Riverheads’ Luke Humphries both shot 78, but Page County edged the Gladiators 349-357 in the second Shenandoah Mini Tournament on Monday.

At Bryce Resorts, the Riverheads golf team won the first Shenandoah District mini on Tuesday, shooting a 356 as a team.

CROZET — With a six-stroke lead on the competition, Mikey Moyers took the first tee box in the final round of the Group AA championship knowing that an even-par round would more than likely be enough to defend his title.

It’s an old adage that you can’t win a golf tournament in one day.  That may be true, but you can sure come close. 

It was do or die for the six teams that participated in the Region III golf meet at Heritage Oaks Golf Course on Monday. That’s because only two will make the cut and move to states on Oct. 13-14 in Crozet at Old Trail Golf Club.

STAUNTON — R.E. Lee captured the Southern Valley District Golf Championship at Gypsy Hill Park on Tuesday afternoon.

NEW MARKET — While the team golf title had already been determined in the Shenandoah District, with Stonewall Jackson taking top honors, the individual honors were still being contested.
