More to do on treasurer

Dispensing with the obvious, that being the necessity of replacing Waynesboro’s treasurer, Stephanie Beverage soon must begin with something ostensibly more complex: figuring out how to keep the state auditor off her back. As she attempts this, the City Council might consider how to right the office permanently.

Council signs off on Delphine construction amendment

Waynesboro City Council voted unanimously Monday to amend the agreement between the city and state for the Delphine Avenue Improvement Project.

In the amendment, the Virginia Department of Transportation will lift $26,000 of the project’s expense from the shoulders of the city, but will expect Waynesboro to accept more responsibility should the project be delayed or expenses increase, said City Manager Mike Hamp.

Comments support dealership requests

Public comments before Waynesboro City Council on Wednesday night mostly supported two special use permit applications to open car dealerships along Main Street.

G&W Motorwerkes in Staunton, one of Virginia’s few Porsche sales and maintenance shops, recently applied to relocate into the recently vacated Grand Home Furnishings building at 518 W. Main St.

City Manager to fill 5 staff spots

The Waynesboro City Council on Wednesday night approved the city manager’s request to fill five of 17 vacant full-time positions in city departments.

In September, City Manager Mike Hamp asked to fill six positions. Due to a hiring freeze in effect for city employees, Hamp must seek the council’s approval before filling vacancies.

The city has saved $76,719 by keeping the positions unfilled.
