I applaud Augusta County supervisors’ decision to hire an economic development director, a move that will increase the county’s tax base and job opportunities for the area’s unemployed. But I have several questions.

Cheer projects, and push them

Drawing horses and cattle from the nether reaches of fields frequently involves the fine art of rattling feed in buckets. Drawing homeowners from the nether reaches of living rooms is a tad more detailed, frequently involving plans for developing neighboring property. At least cows can’t carry torches.

Augusta County

A Stuarts Draft woman left her home Sunday to find her SUV missing and soon noticed a man driving it slowly along her street.
The woman, 50, called to her boyfriend, who unsuccessfully gave chase in his car.
Also taken was a GPS unit, jewelry, cash, a cellphone and credit cards valued at nearly $2,000.
Augusta County sheriff’s deputies canvassed the area near the 700 block Old White Hill Road and Stuarts Draft Highway, said Capt. Glenn Hanger. A deputy soon found a Staunton man behind the wheel of the woman’s 2002 Nissan Exterra.
Bryan Layne, 19, of Staunton, faces charges of unauthorized use of a vehicle, petty larceny, four counts of credit card theft and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor for allegedly bringing a juvenile along for the auto theft.
Authorities said a spare key for the Nissan was hidden in the gas cap area, which may have aided Layne.
Layne is free on bond from Middle River Regional Jail in Verona.

Theft of mower will cost Legion

I must admit that I write this letter out of pure frustration. The aggravation comes from experiencing a very costly theft of lawn equipment from American Legion Post 340, located on East Side Highway in Waynesboro. Recently you (person or persons unknown) broke into our storage building and took a lawn tractor, self-propelled walk-behind mower and a weed eater. The loss of the tractor, a John Deer Model LA130, serial number GX0130A13535, is financially devastating to us.
