No wonder some voters actually wrote on the screen itself, as reported in Thursday’s newspaper (“Write-ins wrangled”).

Steve Landes’ thirteen years in the House of Delegates have served him well enough, but they have not done the same for us in the 25th District. In a recent debate with his opponent, Greg Marrow, Landes failed to offer concrete examples of anything he had done to help us. On his Web site, I found 15 pieces of legislation he had sponsored. For the most part, they reflect his fondness for cleaning-up, such as repealing an obsolete section of a bill concerning the “transportation of troops by railroad,” or pensions paid to “widows and maiden or widowed daughters of Confederate veterans.” These are not the sort of actions that foster a living wage or fix the bridges and roads in the Shenandoah Valley or meet any of our needs. To be honest, they appear frivolous.

Creigh is a friend. When I had my period of illness, Creigh was there. He called, he cared and he wanted to help. When our sons would go against each other in soccer at Buffalo Gap and Bath County, he would be there. We would stand by the fences being dads supporting and yelling for our kids. He is a man who is traditional enough to still have his pastor over for supper but current enough to know the need to author legislation like Megan’s Law.

On Oct. 6, 1938, Sir Winston Churchill made a speech pertaining to the Munich Agreement with Germany. I have paraphrased it in a portrayal of today’s U.S. economy:

“Our loyal and brave people should know that there has been gross neglect in the way we do business. They should know that we are sustaining unending wars, the consequence of which will travel far with us along our road. They should know that we have passed a milestone (stimulus package) in our history when the whole financial equilibrium of our country has been deranged and that terrible words for the time being have been pronounced pertaining to our economy.

I must admit that I write this letter out of pure frustration. The aggravation comes from experiencing a very costly theft of lawn equipment from American Legion Post 340, located on East Side Highway in Waynesboro. Recently you (person or persons unknown) broke into our storage building and took a lawn tractor, self-propelled walk-behind mower and a weed eater. The loss of the tractor, a John Deer Model LA130, serial number GX0130A13535, is financially devastating to us.
