Write-ins best bets for troubled treasurer job
Published: October 28, 2009
Elections give aspiring people who seek public service the opportunity, if supported by public opinion, the privilege to serve. There is no greater comfort or higher honor than being elected by one’s constituents to be their representative.
Conversely, if after having been elected one fails in the performance of their duties, then it becomes incumbent upon the electorate to remove that person from such responsibility. Such appears to be the case with Waynesboro’s current treasurer.
In the Oct. 27 edition of The News Virginian (“4 vie for treasurer position”), Tony Gonzalez seemed to capture the aspirations of the three write-in candidates as well as the defenses and excuses for recent failures in the Treasurer’s Office. Simply put, nine years of incompetence, ineptitude and non-compliance with state-mandated guidelines resulted in huge misrepresentation of deposits, tax collections, etc.
It is totally immaterial to me who is the treasurer of the City of Waynesboro. It is a job that requires a dedicated, honest and capable person in charge.
Please choose this person carefully and responsibly write in your choice.
