Warm hearts rally for neglected pooches
Published: September 10, 2009
Recently, I went to the SPCA to see how the adoptions were going with the dogs that had been removed from the kennel in Stuarts Draft (“Kennel under investigation,” Aug. 22). It was the most heart-warming sight to see all the employees, including the director and the business manager and so many volunteers putting their care and love into this mass adoption process.
It just brought tears to my eyes to see the public come in and save these adorable dogs. All the small dogs were adopted that day. If you have never rescued a dog or cat or any animal, you wouldn’t understand the look you see on the animal’s face when they know they are going home to be loved and pampered instead of living a life in a cage with no love. Rescue one sometime. I bet you’ll be glad you did.
Our shelter staff worked until 4 a.m. preparing for the pickup of these 99 dogs who were sheltered in deplorable conditions, matted with dried feces and in total, neglected. It began with the removal of the dogs to various shelters. Special thanks HSUS. They came in and helped so much with the organization of what dogs went to which shelter. The little dogs were housed by Augusta Valley Animal Hospital until our shelter could be prepared for the influx of so many dogs. Several days later, volunteers and groomers volunteered their time and bathed and groomed each and every dog so they would look their best for the new owners.
Thanks so much to all of you who made this such a success.
