Tip of the cap to TNV, city for successful shoe drive
Published: November 6, 2009
At the conclusion of a successful effort to provide shoes (5,500 pairs were collected) for the widows in Kenya, Africa, I would like to express on behalf of Summit Square sponsors of the shoe collection effort, our thanks to the staff of The News Virginian. Their excellent work helped to make this collection effort one to be remembered.
As mentioned in Bob Stuart’s excellent story at the beginning of this effort (“In their shoes,” June 29), the shoes will be shipped to Kenya and sold to the people there. His article told the story of the shoe effort and was very complete. In Kenya, as pointed out in his article, when the husband dies, the widow is left with only the clothes on her back. All the rest goes to her husband’s family. A pitiful situation.
The advertisements designed by your personnel and placed in the paper were attractive. I received many compliments on them.
Also mentioned in Bob’s article was the fact that the shoes will be sold in Kenya and the proceeds used to buy a direct parcel of land for the widows to build a home. Our collection, when sold, will provide land for seven widows to build houses. Wonderful! Summit Square wishes to thank the people of Waynesboro and The News Virginian for making this project a great success.
