Graves distorts the mission of Dr. King

Here we go again.

Nelson Graves just can’t get it through his head that the Civil War is over (“Discrimination gains new life,” July 9). The white people today had nothing to do with slavery.

It seems that Mr. Graves thinks that discrimination only works one way, whites against blacks. Quotas that favor any race are wrong. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said he wanted to see ALL God’s children be judged by their character, not by the color of their skin.

As long as there are people like Mr. Graves stirring the pot, discrimination will live forever. If I had a business, I would want the best man or woman for the job. It would not have anything to do with the color of their skin. It would have to do with how they could do the job. If there were a test involved, the high scores would be greatly considered.
I just can’t see why putting a person up for a job when he did not meet the requirements helps anyone, especially the person doing the job. I would not want an electrician wiring my house to have the job because of the color of his or her skin.

Here is a little personal history. According to the National Geographic DNA research, my bloodline came out of Africa 80,000 years ago and settled in Western Europe and from there went to America. Since family history also states that my grandmother, whom I never knew, was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian, does that make me an African-Germanic-Native American-American? No. I am just an American. No hyphenated words here. As long as people use this to describe their history, there will always be barriers between people in America.
