Faith off limits for news editorials
Published: July 26, 2009
I have been a reader of The News Virginian in excess of 30 years and after returning from a week’s vacation July 18 I looked forward to reading the missed papers that were delivered July 20.
I usually read the first section in its entirety. I got to the July 11 paper and was reading the “Three Up-Three Down” editorial and was shocked to read the section titled “End games.”
You made reference to the Jehovah’s Witnesses huddled in Richmond and reference to the “four horsemen” coming! I don’t know why this was considered editorial material, but I believe you stepped below, way below your perceived dignity! This is a faith matter and belongs exclusively to the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
There have been countless articles on the Catholic Church’s problem with rogue priests and the “protection” of them by supposedly good bishops! There isn’t a church that doesn’t have an “issue” of one kind or another.
The “Second Coming” timing is not sacred and has changed over the past 50 years, so that makes it an editorial topic? The Catholic Church believes that the communion bread and wine are actually the body and blood of Christ! Why not raise this to the Editorial page? Just to answer your question, I am an active Catholic!
Tolerance of religion is an expectation that we should all have since its choice is a constitutional protection. I would hope that in the future the perceived dignity of this paper will tolerate and not belittle ones faith.
