Please, people, vote to save America: John McCain and Sarah Palin.

I am very disturbed to hear that some Christians will be voting for Barack Obama.

The catchword in the present political battle for president is change.

When Barack Obama went to Germany, he told the German people that America is not what it could be or once was.

Democrat Barack Obama’s campaign seems to focus on two primary subjects, tax policy and the economy and claiming that electing Republican John McCain means more of President Bush.

Despite the many naysayers and many negative comments about the fairness and the ability of federal bailout plans to right our economic ship, we are already seeing many positive results.

Sam Rasoul earns my vote for Congress on Nov. 4.

Third-graders in Virginia are taught that a human life begins with the union of sperm and egg, yet Sen. Barack Obama stated at Saddleback Church in California in August that the question of when life begins was “above his pay grade.”

Sam Rasoul hasn’t been to Congress. Republican Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke, the incumbent in the 6th District, has been there for 15 years (even though he pledged to serve no longer than 12 years).

Shame, shame on you for having the audacity to allow the titling of your front-page article by reporter Bob Stuart on Oct. 12 to read, “Retired military leaders say Obama is best choice.”

Last year, the voters of Waynesboro were asked to vote on putting a fire station on the west end (“Fire station’s exact scope still on table,” Oct. 15). Perhaps the question was misstated. Perhaps they were saying they wanted to be sure of good fire protection. What will the costs of a new firehouse, the equipment to put in it and the personnel to man it through their retirement be? How many tens of millions of dollars? Does anybody know?

As we go from one sport to another, I would like to take time to let the community of Fishersville know how blessed we are to have our young athletes growing up here. We have one coach (a father and husband), Tom Shumate Jr., who is a real asset to the kids who have had him as their coach and leader.

Recently, we have sat in three different living rooms, including our own, listening to Sam Rasoul, of Roanoke, discuss his desire to represent us in the 6th District of the U.S. House of Representatives.

It appears that the Republicans have another double standard when it comes to referring to their vice presidential candidate (“Voting for the chick,” Oct. 13).

Virginians will have the opportunity to make a difference for ourselves with regards to health care in November when we vote for Sam Rasoul for Congress.

Sen. John McCain, as a prisoner of war for five years during the Vietnam War, displayed the greatest strength while undergoing the massive, arduous mental and physical abuse continuously applied by his North Vietnamese captors.

We are a democracy, and if an informed electorate chooses Barack Obama as the next president, so be it.

For the first time in many years, 6th District voters have a real choice in the congressional race.

Today, I read a letter to the editor from my friend, Tim Harrison (“Christian politics isn’t helping the country,” Sept. 10), in which he stated his disappointment in the Republican Party and said he would vote for Barack Obama.

As the country prepares for the presidential election, and with political fundraising having reached an all-time high this year, The Salvation Army has issued an urgent call to residents of Waynesboro and East Augusta County not to forget to respond generously to the needs of the less fortunate this holiday season.

The First Amendment says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

In consideration of the current bailout proposals, I urge you to consider it as I and the majority of informed, educated, voting people do: Threatening the American public with economic tumult and turmoil lest a bailout be approved boils down to nothing more than blatant extortion.

Loyal citizens of the United States, are you ready for four more years of Bush failures under John McCain?

Barack Obama has 143 working days of experience in the U.S. Senate.

I question the piece by Republican Del. Bob Marshall, (“Congress shouldn’t reward gamblers,” Sept. 29) who lays the financial crisis at the feet of President Bush and Wall Street lobbyists.

Consider this: President Bush, in the manner of a dictator, took us into war with Iraq without the approval of Congress.

If you received a call from a stranger who demanded that you pay his bar bill and bookie or he would ruin your family’s finances, you wouldn’t reach for your wallet.

On Aug. 27, I was in a funeral procession on Route 250 going to a burial in Fishersville.

If you needed further proof that electing John McCain would be electing Bush/Cheney for a third term, his choice for vice president cleared all doubts.

I always enjoy your editorials, even if I don’t always agree.
