Caldwell has staying power as city sheriff
Few of the choices on ballots next week will be more clear-cut than the one for Staunton sheriff. Something of an authority on this is the fellow challenging incumbent Alex Caldwell Jr. for the job.
Michael Painter says he’s frequently asked why Caldwell should be replaced after nine years in office. “The sheriff hasn’t done anything wrong per se,” Painter told Chase Purdy of The News Virginian. Well, why per se, should Painter get the job then? “I think it’s a place where I can make an improvement.” This entails setting procedures and working more closely with the Middle River Regional Jail. Oh.
The sheriff’s responsibilities include maintaining court security and delivering papers. Caldwell, who’s been with the department for 22 years, has worked on the installation of a metal detection system and reduced access to the court building to tighten security. He’s also managed well tightening finances.
Caldwell has shown he’s right for the job. Voters should keep him there.
