THE GOOD FIGHT:Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked by the NFL among others, ends today but never for people such as Waynesboro’s Bekky Jones-Ludwick and husband, Tracy, nor for American women. Bekky has been cancer-free since a mastectomy in March, but the battle for others goes on. The Waynesboro couple have erected a large, illuminated pink ribbon in their front yard to keep awareness alive. Awareness and money for further research is key to surviving.

TREASURED: Voters face the wrong kind of tough choice for Waynesboro city treasurer, picking from a shaky incumbent, a previously defeated challenger and two write-ins. The Waynesboro Citizens for Responsible Spending performed a valuable service Wednesday when they gathered all four candidates for a public forum.

GIANT STEP: Waynesboro High’s football team faced a stiff test Friday night against Stuarts Draft, but a week earlier notched its first win amid a trying season. Thumbs up to the boys, and a call-out to the city to lift the team’s anemic home attendance mark.

FUZZY MATH: Silly Americans. Polls show they doubt talk of a recovery. Didn’t they hear President Barack Obama? The administration claimed Friday that the president’s stimulus package created or saved 650,000 jobs. The Associated Press said in a report a day earlier that the nebulous saved-jobs statistic had been dramatically inflated in previous White House claims. And unemployment sits at 9.8 percent, a 26-year high. If the economic winter is over, why is it so cold?

HELL ON HIL’: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has had better weeks. First, a book claimed Obama passed her over as vice president because of her hubby, Bill. Then her “charm offensive” in Pakistan fell flat, observers said. A professor called a meeting between Hil’ and professional women “a waste of my time.”

SAY IT AIN’T SO, JOE: Pssst. Vice President Biden has a trade secret he wants to share WITH THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. Visiting a car plant Tuesday, Ol’ Joe said Fisker Automotive plans a line of plug-in hybrids. The trouble is? Those plans were supposed to be private. Oops.
