Abductor to serve 15-year sentence
Published: September 19, 2009
A Waynesboro judge quashed alcoholism as a defense for Roy Scott Thompson in court Friday before sentencing him to 15 years in prison for abducting and soliciting sex from a teenage babysitter.
Thompson, 25, of Waynesboro, pleaded guilty in May to abduction and child pornography charges, just before a trial that would have put the 14-year-old girl on the stand.
During sentencing Friday, Thompson watched as his aunt, mother and best friend took the stand in his defense.
“He’s a great father.”
“My son’s a good kid.”
“He ran into some bad luck.”
The three described Thompson’s struggles with alcohol, a problem that began at age 14, they said.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Charles Ajemian discarded alcohol as an excuse for Thompson’s crime.
“You and your witnesses have described your problem as an alcohol problem,” Ajemian said. “It is accurate that you were in possession of child pornography, and so it’s fair to say you’ve been preoccupied with sex?”
“Yessir,” Thompson said.
Ajemian gestured toward the victim’s parents, then asked Thompson about the consequences of his actions.
“They had allowed [their daughter] to babysit for your child,” he said. “Do you know what’s happened to her since? Did you know she was hospitalized – that it was for mental problems?”
“No,” Thompson replied. “I knew she was hospitalized.”
Thompson’s actions initially seemed harmless to the girl Dec. 27, 2008, when she went to his house as a babysitter for the man’s 8-year-old daughter, authorities said. The girl did so frequently, and had spent the night.
But Thompson abused the situation that night. According to authorities:
Thompson took the girl to a party in Staunton, solicited her for sex via text messages and offered her alcohol. At one point he suggested a threesome with a 12-year-old boy.
His advances continued back at his home in the 400 block of Market Street, where the girl stayed overnight, unharmed. The next morning she made breakfast for the 8-year-old before running to the police desk, crying.
Waynesboro police later searched Thompson’s home and found “voluminous” amounts of pornography, most featuring young adult women, authorities said, and some photos of juvenile girls kept in three-ring binders.
“The most sinister thing in this case is that you can fool people,” Ajemian told Judge Humes J. Franklin. “It’s too easy to fool people.”
Ajemian motioned toward Thompson’s supporters.
“They see him as a good kid, but if they saw the images … if they saw the text messages he sent,” Ajemian said, trailing off.
Franklin asked if Thompson had anything to say before his sentencing, and then listened to an apology
Then the judge spoke.
“We could be here for days and I don’t think we could explain what this young girl went through – I don’t think a psychologist could,” he said. “[Thompson] didn’t run into bad luck, he created a nightmare situation.”
Thompson will be on probation for the rest of his life after his release from prison. He awaits a sentencing hearing in Staunton Circuit Court for an indecent liberties conviction for his actions with the girl at the Staunton party.

I think what this man did was terrible, but I also think there is more to this story than has been told. If he was sending sexually explicit text messages to the girl while she was still in Staunton why did she go home with him? Why stay and fix his child breakfast? My guess is the girl already knew of the pornography collection as it appears the police knew where to look. I think he got an awfully stiff sentence compared to some that have actually molested and only got a slap on the wrist. I also think the wife was just as guilty and should have been tried also. I think that crimes against children are the worst kind of crimes but criminals should be given equal and fair justice.
P.S. Voluminous amounts of pornography found? Who are you kidding?
And just why does he need a babysitter in the home when he is there himself? Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, and a lot of people caught with evidence “don’t know how it got there-it isn’t mine.“ His computer, his home, HIS responsibility. Cops hear it all the time. So don’t get so defensive because his sentence isn’t going to change anyway.
This is Roy’s sister and I know that he would never do anything like this. That family is two-faced. The girls mom liked him enough to let her go with him that nite and times before that and nothing ever happen before so why would he do something now. That girl has run away from home and the reason she was in the hospital was because of drugs it had nothing to do with Roy. If she was so scared then why didn’t she go to the police station when Roy went to bed. Not wait till the next morning and then make his daughter breakfast before she goes come on now use comen sense. We ain’t that stupid. I can also tell u first hand that she has done this before to another juevinle I saw it with my own eyes ask her mom that one. About the porn he a guy all guys have porn and if it came off the computer and it was kids then it shouldn’t of been on there in the first place so how did know it was a kid. All the porn on that computer was in a file with his wifes name on it so why wasn’t she charged with anything and then she tried to get rid of the evidence. The so called victims family is messed up. Her mom didn’t have any problem with Roy when he was married to her neice. They started not liking Roy when they split up. My brother gets to spend 15 years of his life in prison for something he shouldn’t have been sittin in there for. The person that said my brother would have done it to his daughter needs to watch their mouth cause my neice’s and nephews was his life. He would never hurt his kids. So back off.
Becky—were you one of the people testifying for him? Are you his aunt? You can’t have your head in the sand so far that you believe that someone planted the porn on the wall of the closet or the notebooks full of kiddie porn in his house.
How about him being convicted of sodomy while a juvenile—was that a set-up as well? Everybody’s got it in for poor little Roy? Wake up! He’s a pervert! If he hadn’t already molested his own little girl, he soon would have.
Well, Becky, I hope this man doesn’t pull the wool over your eyes with his sob stories. I agree his wife should be sitting right next to him in jail because how can you live with someone and not know they are in to porn, unless you’re either in it with him or totally oblivious?
This man doesn’t sound genuinely sorry, and I don’t buy his alcohol woes and sob stories for one minute. He’s sorry he’s going to jail-that’s it.
I wount everybody to know that i have knew roy all my life and i dont think that he would of never done anything like this before. This all ways a setup by people that didnt like him at all. Roy had to kids at the time and one on the way he was a great father to his kids. And also i think roy should of not got anytime for something that he didnt do and there is people out here that has did a crime and didnt get anytime out of the crime that should of got time. also i think his wife should of got the same time has him they lived together and she also was there at the time . from: Becky
I am just glad that he will be out of his own house until his daughter is too old for him to molest. Great father? I doubt it.
His wife was fully involved. She should stand trial, as well. Also, she had to know about the kiddie porn lining the walls of the closet.
I agree that alcohol is not the problem, the MAN is the problem, he had a problem long before he took a drink, and anyone who claims alcohol caused this much problem in his/her life, should leave it alone. He was a perv long before he took a DRINK!
