Staunton police arrested Jeremy Kirk Pope, 29, of Staunton on charges he stole a television and printer from a city residence. Pope, described by authorities as one of their “Frequent Flyers,” has been arrested more than a dozen times in the past three years for various charges including: public intoxication, urinating in public and larceny. In March Pope pleaded guilty to charges of assault and batter and for assaulting a law enforcement officer

Budget woes headline legislative breakfast in Staunton

STAUNTON – Two veteran Shenandoah Valley legislators are prepared to sharpen the budget axe for the 2010 General Assembly.

The legislators discussed the sobering news that Virginia is facing a projected shortfall of nearly $3 billion over the next two years during an area legislative breakfast Wednesday at Bentley Commons in Staunton.

Unemployment picture mixed

Unemployment fell in Waynesboro in September, but rose slightly in both Augusta County and Staunton, according to statistics released Tuesday by the Virginia Employment Commission.

Waynesboro’s rate dropped to 8.2 percent in September compared to 8.5 percent in August.

Staunton pursues grant in order to hire 6 firefighters

STAUNTON — City officials will apply for federal funds to hire six firefighters.

The Staunton City Council voted unanimously Thursday to apply for a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant, which at $527,892 would cover the costs of salaries for the firefighters for two years.

Dropped neglect, abuse charges stun

STAUNTON — An Augusta County judge Thursday dropped charges against a couple accused of neglecting an elderly woman.

Relatives and friends of Irene Mae Mitchell, 84, left the General District courtroom confused and angry after Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Angela Landes failed to provide enough evidence to certify the charges against Timothy L. Propst, 33, and Gracia H. Propst, 32.

Shots are fired in Staunton neighborhood

Shots fired in the area of Stafford Street in Staunton caught police attention Monday night, and now authorities are asking for tips.

The Staunton Police Department released a request, Wednesday afternoon, in hopes of finding assistance in identifying an unknown male who fired a gun at least five times Monday night. More than 20 residents called police, said Staunton police Officer Lisa Klein, sparking an entire shift of officers to respond to the neighborhood.

Men charged for DeJarnette trespass

Six 20-year-old men, armed with flashlights and driver’s licenses from faraway states and poking around the old DeJarnette Center, caught the attention of police Thursday night.

A Staunton officer on patrol noticed the men, and the darting beams of their flashlights, when he pulled forward to investigate at the defunct center off Route 250, said Staunton police Capt. Leslie Miller.
