Forklift accident claims Greenville man
When Lindsey Megginson thinks of her husband, she remembers an unwavering smile, laughter with family and the couple’s last kiss, just before sunrise.
“On the cheek,” she said Sunday. “Like always.”
Just after 8 a.m. Friday, two hours after leaving for work, a forklift pinned Matt Megginson, 27, of Greenville, killing him at Burris Logistics in Lyndhurst, authorities said.
Company officials could not be reached for comment.
The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry will investigate, authorities said.
Matt and Lindsey Megginson married in May after seven years together.
He was a “stranger to nobody,” and he never complained, his wife said.
The couple loved boating, hiking and searching for swimming holes.
In their last week together, they shared dinners with relatives, his wife said.
“He’s always so funny and we were having such a great time,” she said.
Augusta County rescuers raced to the Burris plant on Mount Torrey Road, performing advanced life support operations after getting the call about the accident, said Company 10 Capt. Greg Schacht.
Schacht said witnesses saw Megginson lose control of a standup forklift before the machine pinned him. Coworkers immediately began first aid, followed by rescuers including Capt. Kenny Hyden of the Waynesboro Fire Department, called to the scene on a mutual-aid request. Megginson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Megginson had worked at the plant for only a few months, his wife said.
“The past few days have been hard,” she said. “But there’s been a lot of family here and friends here.”
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, 961 Goose Creek Road, in Fishersville.
Burris Logistics is a food distribution company specializing in refrigerated warehouses and frozen food transportation. The plant was built in 1987 and expanded twice in the 1990s.

Mrs. Megginson, please accept our heartfelt condolences. There are no words powerful enought to help ease your loss. Please contact your neighbors for support and help, we are honored to help your family, including Marley.
Steve Conner ... from Target Distribution Center? If so, comments are not suprising. Perhaps if this was one of your family members you would not have such a rude perspective. God Bless Mr. Megginson and his family. This is truly a tragedy and very sad that a young, happily married couple has to experience such an experience. My condolences to the entire family.
ll, Would you please start posting in english. Your writing is just plain gibberish. You do you think you are fooling with your non-sense.
Re read: ““It all happens,“ which means just that, s—-t happens.
However, from someone’s reply, the lack of supervision does not equate to the worker’s inadequacy, in contrary, the lack thereof could indicate the worker was beyond his ability “to do the job,“ which is a compliment. Here in lies the issue, competence of any employee does not lessen the employer’s burden of supervision—supervision is not there to cover inablity but to cover YOU, as a person—to protect the company, which is an entity (like a person, a corp. has civil rights)and also to protect you.
If there was no supervisor on board at the time of an accient—apparent authorization was instilled into someone—was it not? and let’s hope so, if not, then the upper management is liable not only to the person injured but also to the firm itself.
stevenlconner…some people are so educated, that they are stupid. The more you stick your nose in the books, the more you sound like a donkey!!!! You should get out more, and listen to people who have common sense…but, since that won’t happen, keep on braying…we all know you’re an *ss.
This Connor guy must be the bottom of the PITS kind of human garbage !!!! Sorry for your loss Mrs.Megginson. Your day is coming CONNOR when you will be punished for your attitude here on earth.
To stevenlconner, it’s people like you who put the “I” in idiot. Did you work with Matt? Did you even know him? To even suggest that this was anything more than an accident is ignorant. He was a great person, full of life and brought smiles and laughter to everyone he knew. He was also a very hard worker. Who are you to say that he wasn’t following procedures when this tragedy occurred? There’s an old saying that I used to hear when I was younger…when you ASSume things, you make an A** out of you…in your case, this definitely applies.
No matter how much training or how much supervision a person might have, the fact remains, a forklift is a dangerous machine. Personally, I have never liked a “stand-up” or a “walk-behind” forklift.
My sympathy to the family! And I agree that Mr. stevelconnor made some comments that entirely were uncalled for and had no basis at all.
stevenlconner, what the h*** is your problem. A young man who was full of life with a new wife and tons of friends was accidentally killed Friday. How can you even think that he was goofing off? And I’m sure no supervisor was around because once you start a job, they know you know what you are doing and you don’t have to have constant supervision. And what if a supervisor were there with him, could he have saved his life anymore than what the emergency responders could have? I highly doubt that. You stevenlconner should be ashamed of yourself for even posting a comment like this! You will pay for slander one of these days sir.
stevenlconnor—it was an accident. Get over yourself.
